Sept. 29, 2016 – Illinois @ Nebraska week – Prediction Thursday

Welcome, Husker Nation, to Prediction Thursday. Now I’ll get to this Saturday’s football game in just a minute. But the first thing I want to do is share some of my personal experiences I had with the late great Milt Tenopir, the longtime offensive line coach here at the University of Nebraska who just passed away.

Frankly, most of my memories of Milt were of him staring at me and yelling at me and chewing my butt. Now you have to keep in mind, I’m a defensive lineman, he’s an offensive line coach. At the time I was on scout team. I was a redshirt and I was supposed to give his offensive line a good look every day in practice so they were ready to go out and play on Saturdays. So yeah, on a daily basis he chewed my butt; but I never took it personal. He was doing his job, he knew what he was doing, and we were both trying to help Nebraska win. Now I would classify our relationship as friendly, maybe not friends. But it was all about the W’s and I had so much respect for him. My deepest condolences to his family. And he’s unquestionably one of the greatest football coaches to ever come through the University of Nebraska.

Now as far as the game vs. Illinois this weekend, Nebraska is 4-0 coming in with an average margin of victory of almost three touchdowns. Illinois is coming in with a record of 1-2 and in those two defeats their average margin of loss is over 24 points. My only concerns for this game is Illinois is coming off of a bye, so they could be a little extra frisky; and also Nebraska is a second-half team – which is great. Kudos to the strength and conditioning staff. But if Illinois is hanging around in the second half and a couple of balls happen to bounce their way, you never know what could happen.

But in all honesty, I don’t think it’s going to be that close. My score prediction is 38-17 and I honestly wonder if it’ll even be that close. And I know I’m a little bit cavalier about this football game and my attitude. But I’m not a player or a coach so I can afford to be that way. I just hope I don’t have to eat any crow on Sunday when I’m doing the show for Armchair Quarterback Sunday.

So until then, Go Big Red and always remember to Throw the Bones!
