Bob Elliottt as safeties coach

Welcome, Husker Nation, to another edition of Fast Friday edition of the Carriker Chronicles, where I keep it quick and easy, each and every Friday. Today I want to talk about Bob Elliott. Now, at the moment I'm recording this show, he has not been hired just as of yet, but I'm fairly confident he's going to be. Several sources have reported it is just imminent. Now, I didn't know much about Bob, gotta be honest with you. I picked up the phone, made some calls, talked to some people who are in the knowhow about this. But before I get to what they told me, I did a little bit of research and here's what I found out about Mr. Bob Elliott.

He's 63 years old, that is older than some of the other coaches whose names have been thrown out about this job, but I will talk to you about why I like that in just a little bit. He started coaching at Iowa in 1976, he's been coaching for 40-plus years. He would be the oldest defensive coach on our staff at the age of 63. Bob Diaco is currently 43 years old, our defensive coordinator. John Parrella, the defensive line coach, is 47, Trent Bray, the linebackers coach, is 34, Donté Williams, cornerbacks coach, is also 34 years old.

Now, Elliott himself, he was a secondary coach when Diaco played linebacker at the University of Iowa in the early 90's. He was also the defensive coordinator at Iowa when Bob Diaco was a graduate assistant in 1996 and '97 as well. He coached safeties at Notre Dame in 2012 and 2013, when Bob Diaco was the defensive coordinator there for the Fighting Irish. Now, he would be the only coach we have over the age of 47. I'll tell you why I like that because he's going to bring a different dimension, he's going to bring some wisdom, he's going to bring years of knowledge, he's going to bring some diversity to an otherwise very young coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball, if he is indeed hired. Maybe by the time this show airs, he may be hired, but as of right now we're still waiting, but I am pretty confident.

Real quick I want to talk about Daniel Bullocks because there was a point where people thought Daniel Bullocks was going to be hired. I was excited; I know Daniel personally, very sharp, very smart guy, and I love anytime we can infuse some Husker blood, some Blackshirt blood into this coaching staff, I think it's always good. But the people I've talked to are excited and the hiring is imminent, from what I understand, but the reason they're excited he's familiar with Bob Diaco's 3-4 defense. A lot of our coaches are not familiar with it. They're familiarizing themselves right now. But he's also familiar with the Midwest, being at Iowa, being at Notre Dame for so many years and that's going to help us, especially with recruiting and other things and things of that nature. They're things that will help in the first year.

Bob Diaco obviously knows his own defense, but the coaches, it probably takes them a little bit to grasp a new defensive concept, especially if they haven't coached it before. So his familiarity is going to be helpful to the other coaches and it's just going to take a little less time for the entirety of the coaching staff to grasp this new 3-4 scheme so I like that as well.

Here's what really excites me. You look at our defensive coaching staff, you got Bob Diaco, who won the Frank Broyles Award in 2012, as the top assistant coach in all of college football. Look at our defensive line coach, John Parrella, he's played in three Super Bowls. You look at Donte Williams, he's one of the top recruiters in the entire country. He's the main reason that cornerback Elijah Blades flipped from Florida to Nebraska. You look at Trent Bray, who brought in arguably, of all the position groups, the linebacking core for this year's recruiting class, is probably the strongest position group. I would give that group an A to A-. They are very athletic, and I think they are going to be some dynamic playmakers through the years to come in that group.

Then you look at Bob Elliott, he has coached in a National Championship Game. So you've got the top assistant in America at one point, you've got Super Bowl experience, you've got National Championship experience, you've got top recruiters. I should mention Trent Bray was my recruiter, my host, my player host when I took my visit to Oregon State...that was a fun night. But I'll keep that to myself, don't worry it was all clean, all good fun. I'm excited for Bob Elliott and I can't wait for the news to break that he actually has been hired.
