Recap

Huskers shut down Green, ’Clones

Behind the running of junior I-back Tim Wurth and the Huskers’ strongest defensive effort to date, Nebraska opened its Big 8 schedule with a 23-0 shutout of border rival Iowa State.

Wurth got his first start as a Cornhusker and made the most of it, carrying 18 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Blackshirts swarmed Iowa State running back Dexter Green, holding the Cyclones’ all-time leading rusher to 46 yards on 20 carries and limiting ISU to 82 yards of total offense.

The Huskers used a quarterback sneak by Tom Sorley and a 32-yard Billy Todd field goal to post a 9-0 halftime lead. Then two fourth-quarter touchdowns — a 17-yard scoring strike from Sorley to Kenny Brown and a 15-yard gallop by Wurth — closed out the scoring.

NOTES: Making the victory all the more satisfying was that it ended Nebraska’s two-game losing streak in the series. … ISU’s Green had rung up 248 rushing yards and three touchdowns in those two Cyclone wins.
