QB Newcombe makes case for starting job

Sophomore Bobby Newcombe sprinted 91 yards around left end for a touchdown on his first play from scrimmage as the Whites edged the Reds, 24-21, in the Nebraska football spring game.

Newcombe’s jaunt set a spring game record and helped his standing in the three-way race to quarterback the 1998 Huskers in coach Frank Solich’s first season at the helm.

Newcombe directed five of the game’s seven scoring drives, and Frankie London led the two others.

A wingback last season, Newcombe carried 13 times for 175 yards and completed 4 of 9 passes for 64 yards.

London, a junior, rushed 17 times for 68 yards and connected on 3 of 7 passes for 28 yards. Crouch, a redshirt freshman, carried 16 times for 48 yards and completed 3 of 6 passes for 52 yards.

Solich said a starter would be announced no sooner than Monday after a review of game film.

Commentary

Colonel Mustard

Overall I’m much more confident about the offense than I was before the game.

Hambleton

London still knows more about the offense than the other two. Crouch made bigger gains in four weeks than the other two.
