Nittany Lions maul Huskers

Nebraska suffered its first loss of the season in a 40-7 setback to Penn State in front of a Beaver Stadium and Nebraska school-record crowd of 110,753.

After a scoreless first quarter, Penn State got on the board with Larry Johnson’s seven-yard touchdown run with 12:45 left in the first half. The Huskers responded with an eight-play, 84-yard drive to tie the score 2½ minutes later.

After that, it was all Nittany Lions.

A pair of Robbie Gould field goals gave PSU a 13-7 halftime lead. The Nittany Lions built the lead to 19-7 with a staggering 16-play, 80-yard drive that ate up 7:10 on the opening drive of the second half. Just two minutes later, the flood gates opened when Rich Gardner returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown to give PSU a 26-7 lead.

Commentary

Colonel Mustard

This was a total team breakdown. We’ll see how Frank and the players can respond.

Shatel

Where to start? The defense looked disorganized. The offense outdated. The Huskers looked undisciplined and uncoached.

The good news is that Lord now has two weeks to think about what he did wrong. The bad news? That Lord now has two weeks to think about what he did wrong.

After watching this eerily familiar meltdown for basically the third time in the last six games, one has to ask oneself: ‘Hey, do I detect a trend here?’

Ross

Penn State was innovative in this game, including using backup quarterback Michael Robinson both as a wide receiver and in the backfield.

We’ll have to wait to find out if PSU is that good or NU is that bad.
