Huskers fend off Buffs in Boulder

Nebraska produced a touchdown in each of the three phases of the game and the Huskers never trailed while picking up their fifth straight victory with a 28-20 win over the Colorado Buffaloes at Folsom Field.

The win completed a 4-0 conference road record for the Huskers, who improved to 9-3 on the season.

In building a 21-7 halftime lead, the Huskers scored on a 58-yard punt return by Niles Paul, a 24-yard pass from Zac Lee to Ben Cotton and a 20-yard interception return by Matt O’Hanlon.

The Buffaloes narrowed the gap to 21-14 in the third quarter with a 59-yard TD drive, but several other CU forays into Nebraska territory were turned back by the Blackshirts. Nebraska put the game out of reach with a 13-play, 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter that ended with a seven-yard touchdown run by Rex Burkhead, who finished with 100 yards rushing.

Nebraska totaled only 217 yards on offense but turned the ball over just once, while the Blackshirts forced three turnovers to offset Colorado’s 403 yards of total offense, 56 of which came on a touchdown pass on the game’s final play.

For at least the second time this season, the NU offense muscled up and bailed out the winded Blackshirts with a big touchdown drive.

Pelini’s team may have done enough wrong Friday to leave the window open for a CU comeback, but it wasn’t because it had lost interest.

The CU game … served as an excellent microcosm of the whole season. Sweet, sour, sweet and an ohjustgetitoverwith as a topper.

After 2009 began with so much optimism, it ended with frustration and downright futility. And it begs the question: Where do the Buffs go from here?
