Huskers survive road shootout against Cowboys

The No. 14 Cornhuskers outyarded, outscored and outlasted the unbeaten and No. 17 Oklahoma State Cowboys in a 51-41 win in Stillwater.

Nebraska amassed 542 total yards, including 435 total offense yards from quarterback Taylor Martinez that included career bests of 323 passing yards and five passing touchdowns. The Huskers got some huge special teams plays while notching their sixth straight road win.

On Nebraska’s opening possession, Alex Henery surprised the Cowboys by scampering for 27 yards on a punt-run option on 4th-and-8 from the NU 22. Moments later, Martinez connected with Brandon Kinnie on a 45-yard touchdown strike to give the Huskers a 7-0 lead just 3:40 into the game, and the shootout was on.

With a 66-yard touchdown drive that ended shortly before halftime, Nebraska led 31-27 at the break.

The Huskers held the ball for 21 minutes of the second half and made some key stops to limit the potent OSU offense to 14 points after intermission. Nebraska essentially iced the game with a 12-play touchdown drive that ate up nearly 6½ minutes of the fourth quarter and gave the Huskers a 51-34 lead.

[Martinez's] speed kills. But so can his arm. And now his head is catching up.

Apologies to the optimists, but this day warrants further study.

Against Oklahoma State, if only for one game, Martinez, Paul and Watson quieted their doubters.

What really was the deciding factor was the birth of a dual-threat quarterback.

This defense is not in the same league as last year's and it all starts up front.

NU had to survive – and did.

Nebraska beat OSU because Taylor Martinez did what he had never done before. He became a passer.
