NU falls to Cal

Round Rock, TX — Brian Horwitzs two-out single to right scored Jeff Dragicevich, as California downed Nos. 22/20/19 (Collegiate Baseball/Baseball America/ESPN Sports Weekly) Nebraska, 8-7, at the Express College Classic at the Dell Diamond Sunday afternoon.

Horwitz, who went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, lined a 3-2 pitch from NU closer Tim Schoeninger just past the diving attempt by right-fielder Brandon Fusilier, to plate the game winner from third, as Cal improved to 8-3 on the season with the victory.

The late-game heroics helped Cal withstand a 3-for-4 effort by Fusilier and a ninth-inning Husker comeback, as Bubbs Merrills tied the game at seven with a two-out RBI double in the top of the frame. Trailing 7-6 with two outs in the top of the ninth, Merrill ripped a 0-2 pitch to the gap in left center for a double, scoring John Grose from second with the tying run, but NU could not plate another run, giving the Bears a chance to win in the bottom ninth.

Mike Padgett earned the win for California, throwing 1.1 innings of relief, while Schoeninger, who earned the save in Fridays win, suffered the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

Fusilier paced the Husker offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs in his second Division I game, as NU mustered just six hits against four Golden Bear pitchers.

Cal jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Conor Jacksons two-out RBI single to left scored

David Nicholson, who drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a Jamie Rodrigue wild pitch.

Jackson went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, as Cal finished with 12 hits off three Husker hurlers.

The Huskers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second, taking advantage of three wild pitches by California starter Brent Hale. Joe Gullion reached on a one-out walk and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and a fly out before Fusilier drove him home with a single up the middle for NUs first run. The Huskers eventually loaded the bases before Browns third wild pitch of the frame plated Fusilier from third.

In the third, NU knocked Hale out of the game, scoring three runs to take a 5-1 advantage. A pair of walks and a costly throwing error by Brown loaded the bases before Fusilier took Golden Bear reliever Kyle Crists offering back up the middle for a two-out, two-run single to put NU ahead 4-1. Second baseman Jake Mullinax then extended the Husker lead to 5-1, slapping a single between first and second to score Gullion with the third run of the inning.

Hale allowed one hit, but walked four and allowed five runs - three earned - in 2.1 innings of work, but was not involved in the decision as both pitchers were gone by the bottom of the fifth.

The Golden Bears tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs off the Husker starter. Two-out RBI singles by Ben Conley and Matt Einspahr and Jeff Dragicevich put Cal within a run before Einspahr scored the tying run, as Dragicevich was caught in a rundown between first and second.

Rodrigue went the first four innings, allowing five runs on six hits, but did not factor into the decision.

Nebraska regained the lead in the top of the sixth, as Gordon was hit by a pitch to open the frame before Fusilier drove an 0-2 offering to the wall for a triple, his third hit of the afternoon, to give Huskers a 6-5 lead.

The Huskers dodged a bullet in the sixth, as Cal loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Robertson got Einspahr to ground into an inning-ending twin killing. The Golden Bears took the lead in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs off Quinton Robertson, who came into the sixth. Cal put runners on the corners before Brian Horwitzs RBI single to right knotted the score. Freshman Tim Schoeninger came into face Conor Jackson, who lofted a sacrifice fly to right to give the Bears a one-run lead before Merrills two-out double in the ninth.

Nebraska returns to Lincoln Sunday evening and begins preparations for next weekends series at Louisiana Tech. The Huskers and Bulldogs will play a three-game series with Fridays first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
