Huskers complete Norman sweep

Norman, OK — No. 16 Nebraska got strong performances from a trio of freshmen, leading the Huskers to a 5-2 victory over Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Field. Third baseman Alex Gordon (Lincoln, Neb.) had a career-high three hits and drove in two runs, while pitchers Zach Kroenke (Omaha, Neb.) and Tim Schoeninger (Denver, Colo.) earned the win and save, respectively, as Huskers improved to 19-6 overall and 7-2 in the circuit with their eighth straight win.

Kroenke, who improved to 2-1 on the season, went the first 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits for his second win of the week. The freshman from Omaha Northwest retired 12 of the first 13 hitters he faced, while his streak of scoreless innings reached 11.2 innings before OU scored a pair of runs in the sixth. Schoeninger picked up his fourth save in as many chances, allowing a leadoff hit in the ninth before striking out the final three batters he faced.

NU, which scratched across single runs in five different frames, finished with 10 hits, including two by Jeff Leise (Omaha, Neb.), while Matt Hopper became Nebraskas all-time hit leader with a double in the fifth. The hit was his 283rd of his career, passing Rick Parks conference record of 282 hits between 1997 and 2000. It marked the second hit record in as many days for the senior first baseman from Golden, Colo., who set NUs all-time hit mark in Saturdays 8-6 win over the Sooners.

For the 15th time this season, the Huskers plated a run in the first, as a fielders choice by Brandon Fusilier scored Leise with NUs first run. Leise opened the game with a single and advanced to third on Joe Simokaitis (St. Louis, Mo.) sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch before Fusilers 31st RBI of the season gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Nebraska extended the lead to 2-0 in the third on a two-out RBI single by Gordon. Simokaitis opened the third with an infield single and moved to second on a groundout before Gordon lined a single to score the Husker shortstop from second.

In the fourth, the Huskers took advantage of OUs second error of the afternoon to build a 3-0 lead. With one out, Bubbs Merrill (Omaha, Neb.) reached on Eddie Cornejos error, one of a season-high six for OU on the day, and came around to score as Leise tripled to the wall in right.

Drew Anderson (Kearney, Neb.) opened the sixth with a long homer to right, his second of the season, off OU starter Mike Swindell to give the Huskers a 4-0 lead.

Kroenke, who earned the win with six scoreless innings on Wednesday against Cal Poly, was cruising through five innings, as he allowed three hits and faced two over the minimum before running into trouble in the sixth. The freshman issued a one-out walk to Reggie Willits, who stole second and third before a walk to Eddie Cornejo put runners on the corners. Head Coach Mike Anderson turned to right-hander Steve Hale to face the right-handed hitting Jason Yaconetti. The Sooner third baseman lined a single to right center, putting OU within 4-1. Greg Kish put the Sooners within two on an RBI single past Gordon.

It would be as close as OU got, as the Huskers got one of the runs back in the seventh. Fusilier chased Swindell with a one-out single up the middle before OU reliever David Purceys errant pickoff attempt moved Fusilier to third. Gordon drove in his second run of the day, an RBI single past the drawn in infield, gave NU a 5-2 lead.

Swindell (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs - three earned - on eight hits, as OU dipped to 11-13 overall and 0-6 in the Big 12 with its 10th straight loss, the longest streak since the mid 1960s.

The Huskers return home for a mid-week series against Western Illinois this Tuesday and Wednesday at Hawks Field. Tuesdays first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. while Wednesdays start is set for 2:05 p.m.
