Wichita State rallies to upend NU

Wichita, KS — Drew Moffitt went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, as Wichita State overcame a 5-1 deficit to defeat eighth-ranked Nebraska, 7-5, at Eck Stadium Tuesday evening.

Moffitt, who also scored twice, highlighted a three-run seventh inning for the Shockers, who improved to 23-11 with the win, delivering a two-run single off Husker reliever Steve Hale to give WSU the lead for good at 6-5.

Nebraska, which dropped to 23-8 with the loss, had a chance to send the game into extra innings, puttting the tying runner on in scoring position, as Jeff Leise reached on an error and Joe Simokaitis was hit by a pitch to open the inning. WSU closer Mike Dennison squelched the rally, getting two fly outs and striking out Curtis Ledbetter for his ninth save of the season.

Ledbetter, who went 1-for-4 with a triple, provided NUs biggest highlight of the evening, a three-run triple in the third, while Alex Gordon and Simokaitis had two apiece, as NU finished with eight hits in the loss.

The Huskers jumped to a 1-0 lead on Jake Mullinaxs RBI double in the top of the second. With one out, John Grose reached on an error before Alex Gordon singled to center, putting runners on first and second. Mullinax drove the first pitch he saw for his third double of the year. The Shockers tied the score in the bottom of the frame on Nick McCoolas two-out RBI single that scored Drew Moffitt, who reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out.

In the third, the Huskers loaded the bases with no out on a Simokaitis single, a walk and a hit batter before Ledbetter cleared the bases with a three-run triple to the wall in right, giving the Huskers a 4-1 advantage. Gordons second hit of the day, an RBI single to center, extended Nebraskas lead to four runs.

Wichita State trimmed the lead to 5-2 in the fourth, as Logan Sorensen walk and stole second before coming around on consecutive balks by NU starter Phil Shirek, his first two balks of the season. The Shockers threatened in the fifth as McCoola opened the inning with a double to right before moving to third on a wild pitch, but Shirek averted any trouble by retiring the next three hitters to end the rally.

Shirek went five-plus innings, allowing three runs on five hits, and left with a 5-2 lead. The right-hander struck out five, but walked three and allowed all six leadoff hitters he faced to reach base. Shirek walked Brandon Green to open the sixth and was replaced by Pat ONeill. Two batters later, Drew Moffitt put the Shockers with a run with a two-run homer to center off the Husker reliever.

In the seventh, the Huskers loaded the bases on a leadoff single to Jeff Leise before Sanders hit Fusilier and Ledbetter with two outs, but Matt Wells, who replaced Grose in the sixth, flew out to center to end the inning.

Sanders improved to 5-1 with the win, allowing five runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

The Shockers put runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back two-out singles by Nick Blasi and Green. A Sorensen walk loaded the bases, as Steve Hale was brought in to face Moffitt, who gave the Shockers the lead for good with a two-run single to right. Cody Clark pushed the lead to 7-5 with an RBI double to left.

ONeil (0-1) took the loss for the Huskers, giving up four runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief, while Sanders (4-1
