Mizzou rallies past NU in the 9th

Lincoln — Ian Kinslers ninth-inning single broke a 3-all tie, as No. 20 Missouri scored three runs in top of the ninth to stun eighth-ranked Nebraska, 4-3, in front of 5,911 at Hawks Field Friday night.

The Tigers, who improved to 25-8 with their 13th straight win, were down to their last out before stringing four consecutive hits off Nebraska closer Tim Schoeninger to overcome a two-run deficit. Kyle Johnson started the rally with a pinch-hit single before Tyler Williams hit put runners on first and second. Jayce Tinglers double to right was misplayed by NU right fielder Drew Anderson, allowing the tying run to score before Kinslers single to center gave MU its first lead of the evening.

Schoeninger (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings, as Nebraska was 23-0 when leading after eight innings before MUs improbable comeback snapped the Huskers 11-game home winning streak.

"Being at home this is a tough one to handle, Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. You have to give Missouri credit. They fought hard and came back. We have to remember that this is a series, and we need to bounce back and get ready to play tomorrow."

The Huskers had the tying run on after Curtis Ledbetter (Lawrence, Kan.) drew a two-off walk off Travis Wendte, but Daniel Bruce grounded out to first to end the game, giving the Tiger closer his seventh save of the season.

Missouris comeback spoiled a career night by Husker left-hander Aaron Marsden, who stuck out 11 in seven scoreless innings. The junior was in trouble early on, as the Tigers left the bases loaded in the first and stranded two more runners in both the second and third. After that, the Grand Forks, N.D., native was dominant, allowing one hit in his final four innings of work, as he faced the minimum from the fourth through the seventh. Marsden, who threw 130 pitches, eclipsed the 10-strikeout mark for the third time his season and allowed four hits all singles before Schoeninger came on in the eighth.

"Aaron had a gritty performance tonight, Anderson said. He wanted to stay in the game but his pitch count was up. He fought hard after not having his best stuff in the first couple of innings."

The Huskers, who dropped to 23-9 overall and 9-4 in the Big 12, scored all three of their runs in the second off Missouri starter Justin James, who went eight innings for his sixth win of the season. Ledbetter, who extended his hit streak to 11 games, opened the frame with a homer to right, his seventh of the year, before Matt Wells first homer of the year, a two-run shot to left, gave Nebraska a quick 3-0 lead.

It would be the only mistakes the Tiger starter made in his eight innings of work, as he allowed five hits and struck out three to improve to 6-3 on the season

The Tigers cut the Husker lead to 3-1 on Brad Flanders RBI single, his third hit of the game, in the top of the eight, setting the stage for MUs late rally.

The series continues Saturday afternoon, as Quinton Robertson (5-1, 4.00 ERA) takes the hill against MUs Garrett Broshuis (5-2, 5.26 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m.
