NU roars back from 8-1 deficit to beat Mizzou

Lincoln — Matt Hoppers (Golden, Colo.) three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted eighth-ranked Nebraska to an 11-9 come-from-behind victory over No. 20 Missouri in front of 5,961at Hawks Field Saturday afternoon.

Hopper, who went 2-for-5 with two homers - his 12th and 13th of the season - and a career-high seven RBIs, launched Danny Hills 0-1 pitch into the berm in left, culminating a remarkable comeback for the Huskers, who trailed 8-1 in the seventh before sending the game into extra innings.

"I was so proud of the team." Hopper, who had his sixth career multi-homer game, said. "No one was down and nobody hung their heads. You can question that anytime until you get into a situation like this, and you see what happens. That really showed the character of the team, you see what they are made of."

"Its awesome," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "We tried to put last night's loss behind us. We came back, and we knew that if we didnt win this game, we would lose the series. I'm happy with the team. They showed a lot of heart."

The seven-run comeback was Nebraskas largest since overcoming 10-0 deficit against Iowa State on April 29, 2000, and put the Huskers (24-9, 10-4 Big 12) into second place in the Big 12 standings, one game behind Texas. The win also snapped Missouris 13-game winning streak, as the Tigers fell to 25-9 overall and 9-4 in the league heading into to Sundays series finale.

Trailing 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Huskers scored four in the seventh on Hoppers grand slam, two more in the eighth on an RBI double by Jake Mullinax (Hesperia, Calif.) and a run-scoring single by Joe Simokaitis (St. Louis, Mo.) before Alex Gordon (Lincoln, Neb.), who had three hits and two RBIs, tied the game at eight with a solo homer to lead off the ninth off Missouri closer Travis Wendte, who blew his first save of the season.

The Tigers took the lead again in the 10th on Ian Kinslers RBI ground out with the bases loaded off Jason Burch (Omaha, Neb.), who improved to 2-1 with two innings of relief. Mullinax opened the bottom of the inning by reaching on an error before Jeff Leise (Omaha, Neb.) moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice. Simokaitis, who went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, walked to put runners on first and second for Hopper, who then gave NU the win with his walk-off homer.

Hill (2-1) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing three runs - two earned - in 0.1 innings of relief, as the loss snapped the Tigers 13-game winning streak.

Missouri took a 3-0 lead off NU starter Quinton Robertson (Richland, Miss.), who allowed six runs and nine hits in six innings of work, scoring two in the second on a solo homer by Ryan Rallo and an RBI double by Kyle Johnson before Kinsler, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, doubled and eventually came home on Brad Flanders ground out.

The Huskers got on the board in the bottom of the third on Gordons RBI double, but the Tigers seemingly took control in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs off of three NU pitchers before the Huskers began their comeback.

The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m., as freshman Zach Kroenke (3-1, 1.75 ERA) takes the hill for the Big Red.
