NU rallies to take Missouri series

Lincoln — Brandon Fusiliers RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth lifted eighth-ranked Nebraska to a 7-6 win over No. 20 Missouri in front of 4,545 fans at Hawks Field Sunday afternoon

The junior from Coppell, Texas, capped an exciting weekend of baseball, driving a 1-2 pitch from Cody Ehlers into left for the game-winning hit, marking the second straight game that Nebraska, which improved to 25-9 and 11-4 in the Big 12, won a game with a walk-off base hit.

Trailing 6-4, the Huskers began to rally, as Jeff Leise (Omaha, Neb.) walked and moved to third on a Joe Simokaitis (St. Louis, Mo.) single up the middle. Two batters later, Alex Gordons (Lincoln, Neb) grounder was booted by first baseman Tyler Williams, who came in from right to replace Ehlers. Simokaitis then tied the score at 6-all, scoring on a fielders choice with one out before Fusiliers double went over the head of left fielder Ryan Rallo for the game winner.

The RBI was the first for Fusilier, who went 2-for-2 after coming off the bench in the eighth, since April 2, as he was hitless in his last 13 at-bats before his late-inning heroics. The win gave NU, which remained in second place in the Big 12 standings, its first season series win over Missouri in Lincoln since 1997.

"We had a lot of heart last night," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "We knew that would pay off sometime and it did today. To see our kids fight back today like they did says a lot about the strength of this team."

Freshman reliever Tim Schoeninger (Denver, Colo.) earned the win by pitching a scoreless ninth, while Ehlers, who paced the Tiger offense with three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs, dropped to 0-1, allowing one unearned run after coming in to pitch with one out in the ninth.

Ehlers had given Missouri (25-10, 9-5 Big 12) a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth with a two-run homer off Pat ONeil, setting the stage for another dramatic finish, as all three games over the weekend were decided in the final at bat.

Jeff Leise (Omaha, Neb.) went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Curtis Ledbetter (Lawrence, Kan.), who extended his hit streak to 13 games, and Chad Steele (Omaha, Neb.) also had two hits apiece in the win.

The Tigers manufactured a run in the top of the first without the aid of a hit off NU starter Zach Kroenke (Omaha, Neb.), as Jayce Tingler walked, moved to third on a balk and a wild pitch before scoring on Ian Kinslers ground out to second.

The Huskers tied the score in the fifth, as back-to-back singles by Steele and Jake Mullinax (Hesperia, Calif.) who had one hit and was hit twice, put runners on first and second. Leise then lofted a deep fly ball that was misplayed by Williams, allowing Steele to score from second to tie the score.

Missouri took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh, but Leise tied the game again in the bottom half of the frame, belting a three-run homer to left off Tiger starter Derek Roper, knotting the score at 4-all. Roper allowed four runs - three earned in six-plus innings, while Kroenke pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits, as neither starter factored into the decision.

Nebraska continues its homestand with a two-game series against McNeese State on Tuesday, April 15, at 6:35 p.m.
