Huskers take opener in Texas series

Lincoln — Aaron Marsden fired a complete-game six-hitter, leading No. 11 Nebraska to a 3-2 win over seventh-ranked Texas in front of 6,879 at Hawks Field Friday night. The junior from Grand Forks, N.D., tied his career high with 11 strikeouts, as Nebraska improved to 28-9 overall and 12-4 in the Big 12 with the victory, tying the Longhorns (30-12, 12-4) for a share of the Big 12 lead.

Marsden (6-0) threw 119 pitches for his third complete game of the season, as the left-hander allowed single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to snap the Longhorns nine-game winning streak. It marked the fourth time this season the left-hander had 10 or more strikeouts, while he improved to 7-0 against ranked teams in his Husker career.

"Im not going to compare him to Shane Komine, because Aaron is a different pitcher, but what he did for us tonight is what Shane gave us on Friday nights," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "Aaron created that same special feeling, and he did it by pitching his own way."

Marsden started strong, striking out the side in the first and retiring 11 of the first 12 Longhorns he faced before Dustin Majewskis two-out triple in the fourth. While Marsden iced the Texas bats, Nebraska jumped to a 3-0 lead, scoring a run in the third and two more in the fifth off of Longhorn starter Danny Muegge, who took the loss to drop to 5-4 on the year.

NU had runners on third in the first two innings, but could not capitalize before finally breaking through in the third on Alex Gordons (Lincoln, Neb.) two-out RBI single. Jake Mullinax (Hesperia, Calif.) coaxed a walk and moved into scoring position on a Jeff Leise (Omaha, Neb.) sacrifice bunt. With two outs and runners on first and second, Longhorn second baseman Tim Moss made a diving stab, but could not throw out Gordon at first, allowing Mullinax to score from third with the first run of the game.

Mullinax, who went 1-for-2 with a walk, started the Husker offense in the fifth with a leadoff single. Leise, who had a hit and a pair of sacrifices, moved the NU runner into scoring position before Joe Simokaitis (St. Louis, Mo.) gave the Husker a 2-0 lead with a RBI double to right. On the play, Majewski kicked the ball away, allowing Simokaitis to move to third. The mistake was costly, as Matt Hopper (Golden, Colo.) singled back up the middle, giving Marsden and the Huskers a three-run cushion.

Muegge allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, as the Longhorn bullpen kept UT in the game with 3.2 innings of one-hit ball.

The Longhorns trimmed the lead in the sixth, as Majewski delivered a two-out RBI single, putting UT within 3-1, but Marsden got out of a two-on, two-out jam by striking out Curtis Thigpen to end the threat. In the eighth, Texas closed to within a run, as Tim Moss opened the inning with a double before coming home on Omar Quintanillias RBI single to left, cutting the NU lead to 3-2. Texas, which stranded seven runners, could not plate the tying run in the eighth, as Marsden struck out Thigpen, who whiffed three times, to end UTs final threat.

The crowd of 6,870 was the largest regular-season crowd in school history, breaking the mark of 5,961 who witnessed last Saturdays win over Missouri.

The series continues Saturday afternoon, as Quinton Robertson (5-1, 4.71 ERA) takes on UT left-hander J.P. Howell (6-0, 2.22 ERA). First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on Nebraska Educational Television and on College Sports Television.
