Longhorns prevent Husker sweep

Omaha — Matt Hopper became the Big 12s all-time homer leader, but seventh-ranked Texas salvaged the final game of the series with a 10-4 victory over the No. 11 Huskers in front of 8,193 at Omahas Rosenblatt Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Hoppers homer, his 16th of the season, gave him 58 for his career, breaking the career Big 12 record he shared with Oklahomas Casey Bookout. Hoppers third-inning blast was one of the few offensive highlights for Nebraska, which fell to 29-10 and saw its six-game winning streak snapped.

The win put the Longhorns (31-13) and Huskers into a tie for the Big 12 lead with identical 13-5 marks, one game ahead of third-place Texas A&M.

Hoppers two-run homer in the third off UTs Justin Simmons put the Huskers within 4-2, but the Longhorns extended the lead with two runs in the fourth before adding a pair of runs in the seventh and eight for the final margin.

Daniel Bruce tied a season high with three hits and drove in a run, while Jake Mullinax (Hesperia, Calif.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI, as NU could not overcome an early 4-0 deficit.

J. Brent Cox (3-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits in 2.1 innings, while Huston Street, who scored twice, kept NU off the board for the final three innings for his seventh save. Freshman Zach Kroenke suffered the loss, allowing three runs in two innings, as he saw his three-game winning streak snapped.

UT jumped to a quick 3-0 lead off the Husker starter, scoring a run in the first on an RBI single by Dustin Majewski and two more in the second off Joe Ferins two-run homer, his third of the season. The homer was the first allowed by Kroenke (3-1) all season. In the third, Tyler Teagarden gave the visitors a 3-0 lead on a safety squeeze that scored Scott Dodge.

The Huskers finally got on the board in the third, as Joe Simokaitis singled and came home on Hoppers Big 12 leading 16th round tripper of the season. UT quickly extending the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Omar Quinanilla, his fifth of the year.

The Huskers trimmed the lead to 6-4, plating a run in the fourth on Bruces RBI double that scored John Grose, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. In the sixth, NU put runners on second and third before Mullinaxs grounder to second put NU within two runs.

It would be as close as the Huskers got as the Longhorns plated two in the seventh on J.D. Reiningers two-run bases loaded single before plating two more runs in the eighth.

The three-game series drew 20,905, including a Hawks Field regular-season record crowd of 6,879 for Fridays game.

The Huskers begin a busy week on Tuesday, April 22, as Creighton visits Hawks Field for the first of three meetings this season. First pitch between the Huskers and Bluejays is set for 6:35 p.m.
