Huskers win thriller against Creighton

Lincoln — John Groses bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth broke a 7-all tie, as sixth-ranked Nebraska pulled out an 8-7 win over Creighton in front of 4,363 at Hawks Field Tuesday evening.

Grose sent Bluejay closer Steve Grasleys first pitch to the wall in right center, allowing Joe Simokaitis to score from third with the winning run. Grose, who went 2-for-5 and recently returned to the lineup last weekend against Texas, drove in his first run since April 8. The win improved the Huskers to 30-10 on the season and marked NUs third walk-off home win in the last eight contests.

Simokaitis opened the ninth on a single off of Brian Furlong before moving into scoring position on Matt Hoppers ground out. Alex Gordon was intentionally walked, as the Bluejays brought in Grasley to face the right-handed hitting Daniel Bruce. On the first pitch, NU executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Bruce was then intentionally walked to set up Groses game-winning hit one pitch later.

Furlong (1-3) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit in 2.1 innings, as the Bluejays, who dipped to 13-25, scored twice in the seventh and the ninth innings to nearly send the game into extra innings. Creighton struck for a pair of runs in the ninth, taking advantage of a costly dropped popup by Simokaitis. With two outs, Zach Daeges, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, ripped a two-run double to the wall in right, scoring Ryan Fitzgerald and Seth Brown pull the Bluejays even at seven, setting up Groses game winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Jason Burch improved to 4-1 on the year, as he allowed two unearned runs and struck out four in three innings of relief. Offensively, Hopper, Curtis Ledbetter and Gordon had two hits apiece, as Ledbetter extended his hit streak to 19 games.

Nebraska, which is 17-1 at Hawks Field this season, jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead after three innings, scoring six times off Bluejay starter Adam Schaecher, who didnt get out of the third. Hopper delivered an RBI double in the first before NU took advantage of a pair of Bluejay errors by shortstop Gabe Lapito, which led to both of the Husker runs in the second. Run-scoring singles by Ledbetter and Jake Mullinax highlighted a three-run third, giving Nebraska starter Tim Schoeinger a comfortable 6-1 cushion to work with.

Schoeninger, who was making his first start, went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four Bluejays before leaving with a three-run lead.

Creighton cut the Husker lead to 6-3 on Daeges two-run double in the top of the fourth before NU added its seventh run of the contest one inning later on a Drew Andersons ground out to first that scored Ledbetter, who opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice.

The Bluejays continued their comeback in the seventh off Pat ONeil, as a two-out single by Pete Wiedewitsch put the Jays within 7-5. The visitors had a golden opportunity in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, but could not capitalize, as Burch picked off Lapito at second to end the threat.

The Huskers return to action Wednesday afternoon, as they take on South Dakota, beginning at 4:05 p.m. The game will not be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, but will be available on the Internet at HuskersNside.com.
