Huskers even Tech series with 6-3 win

Lubbock, TX — Quinton Robertson allowed one unearned run in seven innings, as sixth-ranked Nebraska evened the series at one game apiece with a 6-3 win over Texas Tech in front of 4,187 at Dan Law Field Saturday afternoon.

Robertson improved to 6-1 on the season, scattering five hits and striking out four, as he matched his longest outing of the season. The 6-foot-4 right-hander allowed an unearned run in the first, but was dominant after that, allowing only two balls out of the infield in his final five innings of work.

"Quinton set the tone for us," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "He gave up the run in the first, but settled down and got a lot of ground ball outs."

"I just wanted our defense to make plays and threw as many two-seamed fastballs as I could," Robertson said after earning his first win since March 29. "My plan was get my fastball to sink and keep it low in the zone so they would get a lot of ground balls."

While Robertson was dominant on the hill, the Huskers (32-11, 14-6 Big 12) were opportunistic at the plate, converting three Red Raider errors into four runs to move into sole possession of second place, one game behind Texas.

"We played well early today, and they made some mistakes to help us out," Anderson said. "We took advantage of their mistakes with some timely hits. Yesterday, everything went their way and it came back for us today. After the way we played last night, to come back and be fundamentally sound and do the small things is how you win games on the road."

Jeff Leise and Brandon Fusilier had three hits each, as NU totaled 11 hits off Red Raider starter Dusty Buck.

After spotting the Red Raiders (25-19, 7-12) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, NU responded with six unanswered runs off Buck, who threw a complete game in a losing effort. The Huskers tied the score in the top of the second, as Alex Gordon doubled, advanced to third on Curtis Ledbetters fly out to center and eventually came around to score on a fielders choice off the bat of John Grose, sliding under the high throw by Tech third baseman Christian Colonel.

Nebraska pushed the lead to 4-1 in the third, scoring three times off Buck, who dropped to 3-2 with the loss. Leise opened the inning with a single and moved to second when Joe Simokaitis was hit by a pitch before the Huskers loaded the bases on Matt Hoppers single. Gordons grounder up the middle was misplayed by Tech second baseman Josh Haney, allowing a pair of runners to score before Ledbetter lofted a sacrifice fly to give the visitors a three-run lead.

In the sixth, the first two Huskers reached on an infield single by Ledbetter, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI and extended his hit streak to 22 games, and a bunt single by Grose put runners on first and second with no outs. Fusiliers sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, but the Huskers had seemingly squandered the rally as Chad Steele flied out to shallow left and Jake Mullinax hit a grounder to short, but T.J. Bruces throw was wide of first, allowing Ledbetter to score and giving the Huskers a second chance. Leise took advantage of the miscue, blooping an RBI single to right center for his third hit of the day to give NU a 6-1 lead.

The Red Raiders closed to within 6-3 in the eighth on a two-run homer by Madison Edwards, his second of the season, off Tim Schoeninger, but would get no closer, as the freshman retired the side in order in the ninth.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon, as left-hander Zach Kroenke (3-2, 2.23 ERA) takes the hill in search of his fourth win. He will be opposed by Red Raider right-hander Steve Gooch (4-3, 4.05 ERA), while the first pitch is scheduled for Noon (central).
