Huskers win 6-2 to even series with Cajuns

Lincoln — Alex Gordon had three hits and scored three times, while Quinton Robertson threw seven strong innings, leading fourth-ranked Nebraska to a 6-2 win over Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field

Gordon went 3-for-3 with a walk, while Curtis Ledbetter and Matt Wells each added homers, as the Huskers (36-12) evened the series heading into Sundays 11:05 a.m. rubber match with the Ragin Cajuns (22-26), who saw their seven-game winning streak snapped.

Robertson improved to 7-1 on the season, scattering eight hits in seven innings, matching his season-long outing. The right-hander from Richland, Miss., struck out three without a walk and allowed single runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to his second straight win. In his last three starts, the junior college transfer is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings of work.

"Quinton Robertson was outstanding today," Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson, who missed the previous four games to be with his father who is hospitalized in Colorado, said. "He threw most of his pitches for strikes and kept their hitters off balance. When you do that, you are going to win baseball games."

Relievers Jeremy Becker and Jason Burch slammed the door in the final two innings, as Burch did not allow a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings for his fifth save of the season.

After spotting Louisiana-Lafayette an early lead in Fridays 4-2 loss, the Huskers seized momentum early, jumping to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and another in the fourth.

Gordon, who was just 4-for-26 over the last six contests, played a big part in both runs, as the freshman third baseman drew a one out walk before Wells sent a 1-0 offering from ULL starter Jordy Templet over the fence in left center for his fifth homer of the season, and fourth in the last six contests. Two innings later, Gordon drove home Ledbetter, who opened the fourth with a double to left, with a single to center, giving the Huskers a three-run cushion.

The Ragin Cajuns came back, as Ray Dees RBI single in the fifth put the visitors on the scoreboard before pulling to within 3-2 one inning later on a two-out RBI single by Ryan Core.

The Huskers got both runs back in the sixth, as Ledbetter chased Templet, (6-4), who allowed four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work, with a one-out homer - his 12th of the season - to left. Gordon greeted reliever Thad Montgomery with a single to right before he eventually coming home on Jake Mullinaxs RBI single up the middle.

Gordon accounted for NUs final run in the eighth off Montgomery, as he opened the inning with a single and moved into scoring position with two outs before scoring on a wild pitch by the Cajun reliever.

The series concludes Sunday morning with an 11:05 a.m. start, as sophomore right-hander Phil Shirek (4-0, 2.27 ERA) takes on ULL left-hander Austin Faught (4-3, 4.32 ERA).
