Cajuns take series with 8-2 win

Lincoln — Kevin Preau went 4-for-5 with five RBIs, leading Louisiana-Lafayette to an 8-2 win over fourth-ranked Nebraska in the series finale Sunday at Hawks Field.

Preau gave the Ragin Cajuns (23-26) all the offense they would need in the first inning, as ULL loaded the bases before Preau drove Phil Shireks 0-1 pitch to the wall for a bases-clearing double, giving Louisiana-Lafayette a 3-0 lead.

The ULL right-fielder would later add RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings, as the Ragin Cajuns became the first visiting team to win a series in Hawks Field and the first visiting team to take a series from the Huskers (36-13) in Lincoln since the 2001 season.

Kraig Schambough, who earned the save in Fridays 4-2 win, picked up the win in relief of starter Austin Faught, allowing one run on four hits in 4.1 innings of work to improve to 4-1 on the year.

"The source of the trouble today was Louisiana-Lafayette," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "They did a good job pitching, and they played good defense. We got down early and there were a few things that went their way. They made their breaks and flat-out out-played us."

The Ragin Cajuns struck quickly in the first, getting back-to-back singles by Dallas Morris and Corey Coles, who had three hits and scored four times, before a sacrifice advanced both runners into scoring position. After an intentional walk, Preau doubled to right center, plating all three base runners just five batters into the game.

ULL extended the lead to 6-0, scoring single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings before the Huskers cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Joe Simokaitis, who had a pair of hits.

Nebraska, which had won six straight series before this weekend, closed to within 6-2 in the sixth on a fielders choice by Drew Anderson that scored Alex Gordon, but would get no closer, as ULL tallied single runs in the seventh and ninth innings.

Shirek suffered his first loss, as the sophomore allowed five runs on seven hits in four innings todrop to 4-1 on the season. The right-hander from Minot, N.D., who fired eight innings of two-hit ball in Tuesdays win over Creighton, struck out five and walked one in his shortest start of the season.

Nebraska finished with eight hits, including two each by Simokaitis and Daniel Bruce, while Mike Sillman provide most of the pitching highlights, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Huskers will be off for finals before returning to action next Saturday, May 10th, to begin a three-game series with Oklahoma State. First pitch for Saturdays opener is set for 6:35 p.m.
