NU sweeps doubleheader against Oklahoma State

Lincoln — Eighth-ranked Nebraska used a combination of offensive heroics and dominant pitching to sweep Oklahoma State in a doubleheader Sunday, winning by scores of 8-7 and 5-2, respectively in front of a crowd of 4,217 at Hawks Field.

In the opener, Brandon Fusiliers two-run triple with two outs in the ninth gave NU its fourth walk-off win of the year, while Quinton Robertson allowed two runs in the complete-game performance to pick up the win in the nightcap, as the Huskers improved to 38-13 overall and 17-6 in the Big 12.

The sweep kept Nebraska in the thick of the Big 12 race, trailing Texas (18-6) by a half game while keeping a half game lead on third place Texas A&M (17-7), a 5-4 10-inning winner over Kansas earlier today. If Nebraska wins on Monday, it will be tied with Texas for the Big 12 lead entering the final weekend of play.

In the opener, Nebraska trailed 7-6 with two outs and no one on before Joe Simokaitis singled to center and Matt Hopper walked, putting runners on first and second for Fusilier, who came in to pinch hit for Drew Anderson. Fusilier, who was making his first appearance since April 30, drove Shane Hawks 0-1 pitch to the wall in center eluding the attempt of OSU center fielder Jose Virgil, scoring both runners and giving the Huskers the dramatic victory.

Pat ONeil (1-0) earned his first career win with 0.2 innings of scoreless relief, as the Huskers overcame a pair of one-run deficits by scoring two runs in both the eighth - on a two-run double by pinch hitter Joe Gullion - and ninth innings.

Nebraska took a 6-5 lead into the top of the ninth, but Chris Gutierrez walked and came around to score on Virgils double. With one out, Virgil, who had three hits and a pair of RBIs, stole third and scored on a throwing error by NU catcher Matt Wells, giving the Cowboys (30-20, 12-11 Big 12) a 7-6 lead.

In the nightcap, Robertson improved to 8-1 with his first complete game of the season, as the junior right-hander scattered 10 hits in a 123-pitch performance and made only mistake all day, a two-run homer to Mario Matulich in the second inning.

"That's his best outing of the year by far, because we needed that," Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson said. "We needed him to go out there in the ninth inning. To me that was a gutty effort."

The Huskers got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second on Daniel Bruces third homer of the year and took the lead for god in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs off OSU starter Joe Weaver, who dipped to 3-6 with the loss.

NU put runners on first and second with one out and had both runners moving when Simokaitis hit a grounder to short. Leise, who was on first, beat the throw to second, while the Husker shortstop was thrown out at first, as NU adverted an inning-ending double play. Hopper, who went 2-for-3 in the nightcap and had four hits on the day, took advantage, sending a two-run single to left to give NU a 3-2 lead.

The Huskers tacked on single runs in the sixth, on Alex Gordons solo homer, his fifth of the year, and in the eighth on Bubbs Merrill RBI single and relied on the pitching of Robertson, who had never gone more than seven innings in his previous 10 starts.

The series concludes Monday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. start, as sophomore right-hander Phil Shirek (4-1, 2.83 ERA) will be opposed by OSU left-hander Spencer Grogan (3-4, 5.23 ERA).
