Huskers beat Baylor, take conference crown

Lincoln — Alex Gordons bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 6-all tie, as eighth-ranked Nebraska clinched its second Big 12 regular-season title in three years with a 7-6 victory over No. 14 Baylor in front of 6,498 at Hawks Field on Sunday afternoon.

The win, coupled with Texas A&Ms 4-1 victory over Texas, gave the Huskers (42-14, 20-7 Big 12) their second outright Big 12 title in three years and the fifth league crown in the programs history (also 1929, 1948, 1950). NU finished a game ahead of both Texas and Texas A&M in the final regular-season standings and will be the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City beginning Wednesday.

"It was our number-one goal at the beginning of the season because it sets us up for a lot of other things," Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson said. "If you win the Big 12, you can host a regional and then a super regional. It's the first step in a lot of things."

Gordon, a freshman from Lincoln, produced his second game-winner of the weekend, as Ryan Lamottas 3-1 pitch was high, allowing Jake Mullinax to score from third with the winning run. With one out, Mullinax reached on an error by Paul Witt, his second of the day, and moved into second position on a walk to Jeff Leise. After a double steal, Lamotta (6-2) intentionally walked Matt Hopper, who went 2-for-3 with a homer and a pair of walks, to loaded the bases for Gordon.

The Huskers had only six hits but were opportunistic in battling back four times before Gordons RBI gave the hosts their sixth last at-bat win of the season. NU took advantage of seven walks and three hit batters, and capitalized on a pair of Witt errors, which led to each of NUs final three runs after the Bears (37-19, 15-12) took a 6-4 lead. In fact, the Huskers scored their final three runs without a hit.

"It was back and forth the whole game," Anderson said. "It kept everyone on their toes. We would have liked to obviously get ahead earlier in the game, but things went our way at the end finally. Our fans were great today, a lot of credit goes to them. It was a lot of fun today."

Mike Sillman earned the win in relief with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. The junior, who picked his first win since April 24, 2002, got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth by getting Michael Griffin to ground into a inning-ending double play. In the ninth, BU had runners on first and second with two outs, but Sillman, who lowered his ERA to 0.59, struck out pinch hitter Seth Fortenberry to end the contest.

Throughout the contest, Nebraska answered every time Baylor scored with a run of its own. With Nebraska trailing 6-4 in the sixth, Abe Woody hit both Matt Wells and Jake Mullinax, who was hit twice and drew a walk, to put runners on first and second. Lamotta came in for Woody. Leise moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Joe Simokaitis grounder went past Witt for an error, allowing both runners to score on the play, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
