Seminoles win with two runs in eighth inning

Minneapolis — Derrick Smiths pinch-hit RBI triple broke a 3-all tie, as No. 22 Florida State scored twice in the eighth inning to down No. 14 Nebraska, 5-3, during the opening day of the Dairy Queen Classic in the Metrodome.

The Seminoles (10-4) strung three consecutive hits to score a pair of runs off Nebraska reliever Mike Sillman, who took the loss. Aaron Cheesman singled to center with one out before Smith came off the bench to deliver the game-winning hit off the fence in right center, scoring Cheesman from first on the play. Bryan Zech then singled through the drawn-in infield to account for FSUs final run.

Brian Schultz retired Nebraska in order in the ninth for his first save, as four Seminole pitchers limited the Huskers, who dipped to 5-2 with the loss, to just seven hits.

Joe Simokaitis was the only Huskers with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Alex Gordon went 1-for-3 and drove in Nebraskas other two runs, as NU tied the score in the seventh before the FSU rally.

The Huskers jumped to a 2-0 lead on FSU starter Hunter Jones, scoring a run in both of the first two innings. In the first, Gordons one-out RBI single scored Jesse Boyer, who opened the game with an infield hit before Jake Mullinaxs sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position.

NU manufactured its second run in the following inning, as Kevin Belcher was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on Colin Shockeys sacrifice bunt. Simokaitis then staked NU a 2-0 advantage with an RBI single to left.

Jones settled down after the first two innings, and pitched into the sixth, allowing two runs on six hits while fanning four Huskers before tiring.

Florida State finally got on the scoreboard in the third, as the Seminoles opened the frame with a pair of hits by Shane Robinson and Stephen Drew before Nebraska starter Zach Kroenke hit Eddy Martinez-Esteve to load the bases. After a pop out, Cheesemans hard-hit grounder was misplayed by Mullinax, allowing two runs to score. The Seminoles eventually loaded the bases again with one out, but NU got out of the frame as Gordon snared a one-hopper by Zech to begin an inning-ending double play.

The Seminoles took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fifth, as Drew hit Kroenkes first offering off the faade in right for his fourth homer of the year. Drew, the only Seminole with more than one hit, was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Kroenke also got into the sixth, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. The sophomore stuck out five and walked only one before leaving with a 3-2 deficit, as neither starter factored into the decision.

The Huskers got the equalizer in the seventh on Gordons sacrifice fly. With one out, Simokaitis doubled past third before a wild pitch moved the Husker shortstop to third. NU loaded the bases before Gordons deep fly to center knotted the score at three.

The Huskers will continue tournament play Saturday evening, as they will take on the host Golden Gophers. The game will be televised regionally on Fox Sports North (DirecTV 641) beginning at 6:35 p.m. The game will also be carried live on the Pinnacle Sports Network.
