Gordon's homer sparks Huskers in win over Creighton

Omaha — Alex Gordons two-run seventh-inning homer broke a 2-all tie, as Nebraska won its seventh straight game with a 7-3 win over Creighton in front of 1,438 at the CU Sports Complex Tuesday afternoon.

Gordons blast, his sixth of the season, off Bluejay reliever Scott Reese gave the Huskers a 4-2 lead and highlighted a three-run seventh, as Nebraska (14-4) took control of the game with five runs in the final three frames.

While Gordons second homer in as many games and his fifth game-winning hit of the season gave the Huskers the lead, the sophomore third baseman was one of several heroes on the day, helping Nebraska to its 10th win in 11 games. NU received strong performances from starter Justin Pekarek and first baseman Curtis Ledbetter in posting their sixth straight win over their intrastate rival.

Pekarek (3-0) went a career-long 6.1 innings to earn his third win in as many decisions. The left-hander matched his career high with six strikeouts while allowing three runs on four hits.

Ledbetter led the Husker offense with three hits and matched his season high with three RBIs to lead NUs 11-hit attack. Daniel Bruce also had three hits and scored twice, while Jake Mullinax went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.

After spotting the Bluejays (8-9) a run in the second on Chase Odenreiders RBI double, NU responded with a pair of runs in the third. A double to Mullinax and a walk to Gordon put runners on first and second before Ledbetter tied the score with an RBI single to center. The subsequent throw on the play moved both runners into scoring position, and NU took advantage as Beau Sullivan put Nebraska ahead 2-1 with a groundout to second to score Gordon.

Creighton, which was limited to just six hits, tied the score in the third with back-to-back doubles by Tony Daniel and Tony Roth, but Pekarek settled down after that, retiring the next 12 Bluejays, as Creighton didnt have another base runner until the seventh.

Reese, who took the loss allowing three runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of relief, was also cruising along until the Huskers struck in the seventh. Bruces doubled with one out and came home two batters later, as Gordon sent Reeses 2-1 offering over the fence in right for his sixth round tripper of the year. Ledbetter then greeted reliever Adam Schaecher with a double before Sullivan, who drove in a pair of runs, delivered an RBI single to give NU a 5-2 cushion.

Creighton eventually cut the lead to 5-3, as Dan Norquist doubled to open the seventh and came home on Odenreiders sacrifice fly, but the Husker bullpen held firm, as three relievers combined for 2.2 innings of shutout ball. Odenreider went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs in the loss.

Ledbetter gave Nebraska some insurance in the ninth with a two-run single off CU reliever Brandon Bird for the final margin.

The Huskers will open Big 12 play on Friday, as they open a three-game series with Kansas. First pitch at Hawks Field is set for 2:05 p.m.
