Huskers upend No. 1 Longhorns, 4-3

Austin, Texas — No. 16 Nebraska scored four unanswered runs, capped by Curtis Ledbetters seventh-inning RBI single, as the Huskers topped No. 1 Texas, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.

Ledbetters single off J. Brant Cox gave the Huskers the go-ahead run, while Justin Pekarek and Brett Jensen combined for 5.1 innings of two-hit, shutout relief. With the win, Nebraska (27-12, 8-7 Big 12) posted its first win over a No. 1 team since May 23, 1999.

Pekarek, who improved to 5-1 on the season, earned his first ever Big 12 win with 3.0 innings of two-hit relief. Jensen struck out three and retired the final seven Longhorns for his second save of the year.

Jake Mullinax had three hits and a pair of RBIs for NU, while Alex Gordon had a pair of hits and drove in the Huskers other run.

Texas (41-6, 13-4 Big 12) struck quickly in the first, as Robbie Hudson led off with a single and stole second before coming home on Taylor Teagardens two-out RBI single. The Longhorns extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice off NU starter Quinton Robertson, who went the first 3.2 innings. With runners on first and third, Robertson uncorked a wild pitch to plate one run before David Marouls RBI single gave UT a three-run lead. Pekarek came in and got the Huskers out of the inning by fanning Drew Stubbs with runners on first and third.

The Huskers finally got on the board against UT starter Justin Simmons in the top of the fifth, scoring three times to tie the score at 3-all. NU loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back singles by Joe Simokaitis and Colin Shockey before Daniel Bruce was hit by a pitch. Alex Gordon brought home NUs first run with a ground out to first. Kyle McCulloch came in from the bullpen and hit Ledbetter to reload the bases before Mullinax tied the score with a two-run infield single.

In the seventh, Nebraska came back, taking a 4-3 lead on Ledbetters RBI single. Gordon doubled off the wall against Buck Cody before Ledbetter greeted Cox with a single up the middle, scoring Gordon with NUs fourth run. Cody took the loss for UT, dropping to 1-1 on the season.

Pekarek closed the door on Texas until the bottom of the seventh, when the Longhorns used a hit batter, single and a walk to load the bases. Jensen came out of the bullpen to face Carson Kainer, who grounded to second to end the threat.

The Huskers begin a five-game homestand on Tuesday evening, when they play host to Northern Colorado at 6:35 p.m. Tickets are available at 800-8-Big Red or at Huskers.com.
