Big seventh inning pulls Cowboys past Huskers

Stillwater, Okla. — Jason Jaramillos seventh-inning RBI single broke a 3-all tie, as No. 21 Oklahoma State scored four times in the frame to take a 6-3 victory over No. 22 Nebraska at Reynolds Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Jaramillos RBI single off reliever Mike Sillman highlighted Oklahoma States (31-15, 14-5 Big 12) outburst after Nebraska took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on Braden Keiths run scoring fielders choice.

The rally was more than enough for Oklahoma State starter Spencer Grogan, who tossed a complete-game eight hitter to improve to 11-1 on the season. Grogan, who leads the Big 12 with six complete games, struck out four and didnt walk a batter in a 97-pitch performance, as OSU clinched the series win over the Huskers.

Nebraska, which dropped to 30-16 overall and 9-11 in the Big 12, was led by John Grose and Alex Gordon, who had two hits apiece in the loss. Gordon went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple for his second multi-hit game of the weekend, while Grose was 2-for-4 with his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot in the third.

Chris Gutierrez paced OSUs 10-hit attack with three hits, while five different players drove in runs in the win.

Nebraska broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the third, as Gordon tripled home Joe Simokaitis, who reached on a two-out double to left center. Gordon then ripped Grogans 1-1 pitch to the right field corner for his 64th RBI of the season.

Oklahoma State tied the score in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single by Josh Fields that plated Keanon Simon, who opened the inning with an infield single and eventually got to third before Fields singled up the middle for the Cowboys first run.

Grose then put Nebraska up 2-1 in the fourth on a one-out solo homer to left center. It was Groses fourth homer of the season – third in league play – and first since April 17.

The Cowboys came right back in the bottom of the fifth on Gutierrezs RBI double off Husker starter Phil Shirek. Simon coaxed a leadoff before Gutierrez sent a 1-2 pitch into the gap in left center to knot the score.

Shirek pitched well, allowing two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings, his longest start since March 27, but did not factor into the decision.

The Huskers regained the lead in the top of the seventh, as consecutive one-out singles by Jesse Boyer and Daniel Bruce put runners on the corners. Keith then grounded out to first, but avoided the double play, allowing Boyer to score NUs third run of the play

After being held to four hits through the first six innings, OSU struck for four runs on the Husker bullpen in the seventh. With one out, singles by Gutierrez and Rusty Ryal off Brett Jensen put runners on the corners. Ty Wright then tied the score at three with an RBI single. Sillman came in and struck out Fields for the second out, but Jaramillo singled a 1-1 pitch into left for the go-ahead run. After a passed ball plated a run, Scott Kirby doubled in Jaramillo for OSUs fourth run of the inning.

Jensen (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing three run on three hits in 0.2 innings after getting the Huskers out of a jam in the sixth by striking out Rod Allen with a runner on second. Sillman struck out a career high five hitters in 1.2 innings, but allowed one unearned run on three hits.

The Huskers threatened in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with one out, but Jake Mullinax grounded into an inning-ending double play, snuffing out Nebraskas final significant scoring threat.

The series concludes Monday afternoon at 1p.m. and can be heard on the Pinnacle Sports Radio Network.
