Huskers avoid sweep with 9-1 win

Stillwater, Okla. — Daniel Bruces grand slam highlighted a five-run sixth inning, as Nebraska took the series finale over No. 21 Oklahoma State with a 9-1 victory Monday afternoon.

Bruce, a career .435 hitter with the bases loaded, provided the Huskers (31-16, 10-11 Big 12) with all of the offense they would need with his second career grand slam. He finished the day going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs to match his career high.

While the Huskers pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of one costly OSU miscue, Dustin Timm and Justin Pekarek shined by allowing the Cowboys (31-16, 14-6 Big 12) just one run. Timm went the first 4.2 innings, while Pekarek (6-1) went the final 4.1 innings, scattering four hits and not allowing a run for the win. The Staplehurst, Neb., native has not allowed a run in 15 innings of relief this season.

Offensively, Jesse Boyer went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Curtis Ledbetter, Jake Mullinax and Braden Keith had two hits apiece for the Huskers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Mullinax gave Nebraska a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a solo homer to left, his seventh round tripper of the season and first since April 10.

Timm pitched around trouble early on, as the Cowboys left runners in scoring position in three straight innings. The Husker right-hander struck out Josh Fields in the third and Rod Allen in the fourth to end potential OSU scoring threats.

Oklahoma State struck in the fifth as Ty Wright singled home Keanon Simon, who opened the inning with a single and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a single by Chris Gutierrez. OSU had runners on first and second with one out, but Timm, who matched his career high with four strikeouts, got Fields to pop out before Pekarek retired Jason Jaramillo on a liner to center.

Nebraska regained the lead for good in the sixth, scoring five runs on only two hits. The Huskers scored five unearned runs off Rew, who went the first 5.2 innings for the Cowboys and dropped to 5-6 on the season.

Joe Simokaitis reached on a fielding error to open the inning before Alex Gordon was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Ledbetters sacrifice bunt put both runners into scoring position before Mullinax was intentionally walked to load the bases. John Groses sacrifice fly to center scored Simokaitis for NUs first run, but Boyer, who reached base all five times on the day, was hit by Rew to reload the bases. Bruce then sent the OSU starters 1-2 pitch off the screen in left for his seventh homer of the season.

The blast by Bruce, the second grand slam of his career, chased Rew after he allowed six runs one earned on five hits.

The Huskers extended their lead to 9-1 in the eighth on two-out hits by Simokaitis and Ledbetter. With runners on second and third, Simokaitis doubled to the gap in right center to plate both runners before Ledbetter scored Simokaitis with an RBI double to left. NU scored seven of nine runs with two outs.

The Huskers return home following todays game to begin a two-game series with Northern Iowa. Tuesdays first pitch with the Panthers is set for 6:35 p.m. while Wednesdays contest is slated for 2:05 p.m.
