Baylor wins on passed ball in ninth, 3-2

Waco, TX — Paul Witt scored on a passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Baylor topped No. 23 Nebraska, 3-2, in front of 2,881 at the Baylor Ballpark Saturday evening.

Witt led off the ninth with a bloop single to right before Chase Gerdes was walked, putting runners on first and second with no out for Baylor (25-25, 12-9 Big 12). NU reliever Mike Sillman struck out Griffin for the first out and got Kyle Reynolds to fly out, advancing Witt to third for the second out, putting the go-ahead runner 90 feet away. Sillmans first offering to Reid Brees skipped off John Groses glove, scoring Witt to give the Bears their second one-run win in as many days.

Sillman (0-2) suffered the loss for Nebraska, which dropped to 33-18 and 10-13 in the Big 12, allowing the unearned run in the ninth after getting out of a two-one, two-out jam in the eighth.

The Huskers had eight hits, including two each from Grose and Colin Shockey, but stranded seven runners, including four in scoring position over the final three innings. The Huskers got the leadoff man on in seven of nine innings, could not capitalize in the seventh with runners on second and third with no outs, something which came back to haunt the Big Red.

Griffin and Sutton both added solo homers for Baylor, which finished with 10 hits in the win.

Nebraska took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single by Curtis Ledbetter. Jesse Boyer coaxed a four-pitch walk from Baylor starter Trey Taylor and moved into scoring position on Joe Simokaitis sacrifice bunt before Ledbetter drove him home with a single to left center.

The Bears tied the score in the bottom of the second on Suttons solo homer that was just beyond the outstretched glove of NU right fielder Daniel Bruce.

NU starter Phil Shirek, who had allowed only two homers all season and never more than one in his first 160.2 career innings before tonights start, surrendered his second round tripper of the evening, a solo shot to Griffin to lead off the fourth. Baylor continued to threaten, loading the bases on a single and a pair of walks, but Shirek got Mike Pankratz to foul out to escape further damage, as the Bears stranded 10 runners.

The Huskers knotted the score in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a Taylor throwing error for an unearned run. After a leadoff double to Shockey and bunt single to Daniel Bruce put runners on the corners with no outs, Taylor attempted to pick off Bruce, but the throw went wide of the bag, allowing Shockey to score from third. NU eventually got Bruce to third after Chad Steeles sacrifice bunt, but could not plate the runner, as BU second baseman Paul Witt, who was playing in, made a diving stab of Boyers grounder, and threw home from his knees to get a sliding Bruce at the plate.

Both starters pitched well, but didnt factor into the decision, as the game was deadlocked after seven innings. Shirek allowed two runs both coming on solo homers on six hits over five innings, while Taylor allowed one earned run over the first six frames. It marked the fifth time in seven Big 12 starts that the Husker starter allowed three runs or less in an outing.

In the seventh, back-to-back singles by Grose and Shockey off reliever Ryan Lamotta put runners on the corners with no outs. Shockey stole second to move both runners into scoring position. Lamotta got Bruce to ground out to third for the first out before Cory VanAllen got out of the jam by striking out Steele and getting Boyer to fly out to left.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1p.m. and the game will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network and on Huskers.com
