Grand slam propels Baylor to sweep

Waco, TX — Josh Fords grand slam highlighted a six-run sixth inning, as Baylor took the final game of the series with a 9-4 win over Nebraska in front of 2,586 at Baylor Ballpark Sunday afternoon.

Ford, who went 1-for-3 with five RBIs, carried Baylor (26-25, 13-9 Big 12) the series sweep, marking the first time since the 2000 season that Nebraska (33-19, 10-14 Big 12) had been swept in a Big 12 series.

Trailing 3-2, the Bears struck for six straight hits off NU reliever Brett Jensen, who had retired 11 straight since getting the Huskers out of a two-on, two-out jam in the second. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases before Fords ninth homer of the season gave the Bears the lead for good. Baylor continued the rally, putting runners on the corners after a hit batter and single before Paul Witts sacrifice fly plated one runner and Michael Griffins RBI single put the Bears up 8-3.

Jensen (1-3) suffered the loss in relief, allowing six runs on five hits in four innings.

The Bears struck in the bottom for of the second, scoring a pair off runs off Nebraska starter Dustin Timm, who lasted only 1.2 innings, on an RBI double by Drew Sutton and a sacrifice fly by Ford. Reid Brees tripled to lead off second as Colin Shockey nearly made an outstanding grab against the wall, but crashed head-on and was knocked off his feet, allowing Brees to get to third before scoring on Suttons double to right center.

Brees and Sutton had three hits apiece for Baylor, which was the last team to sweep the Huskers in a Big 12 series.

The Huskers, who were thwarted by double plays in the first two innings against BU starter Mark McCormick, finally got on the board in the fourth. Joe Simokaitis, who went 2-for-4, singled to right to open the inning and came home on Alex Gordons 17th homer of the year, a two-run shot to center and the first round tripper McCormick allowed all season. After Curtis Ledbetter doubled and got to third on a ground out, Shockey chased McCormick with an RBI single to left, putting the Huskers up 3-2, ending the Bear starters day after 3.1 innings.

VanAllen, who came in the fourth, held Nebraska to one run over three hits over 3.1 innings to pick up the win in relief, improving to 3-2 on the season.

Gordon led Nebraska with three hits, his 23rd multi-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Reid Brees added a solo homer in the seventh, while John Groses eighth-inning RBI single accounted for Nebraskas final.

The Huskers threatened in the ninth as an error, single and walk loaded the bases off BU reliever Zane Carlson with one out, but Abe Woody came in and got Ledbetter to ground into a game-ending double play for his fifth save.

The Huskers continue their four-game road trip on Tuesday night when they take on Creighton and Omahas Rosenblatt Stadium. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised state-wide on Nebraska Educational Television.
