Huskers take Creighton series with 12-1 win

Omaha — Justin Pekarek fanned a career-high nine over seven scoreless innings, as Nebraska clinched the season series over Creighton with a 12-1 win in front of 10,261 at Omahas Rosenblatt Stadium Tuesday evening.

Pekarek (7-1) was dominant against the Bluejays en route to picking up his seventh win, allowing only two hits - a one-out single to Dan Norquist in the fourth and Zach Daeges double in the seventh. The fifth-year senior, whose previous career highs were seven strikeouts against UW-Milwaukee on March 30 and 6.1 innings at Creighton on March 23, easily eclipsed both totals and has now fired 24.0 consecutive shutout innings dating back to April 17.

The Huskers (34-19) supplied the left-hander with all the runs he would need in the second, scoring three times of Creighton starter Scott Reese (1-3), who went just 2.2 innings. Nebraska, which snapped a three-game losing streak, strung five hits in the inning, including an RBI single by John Grose and run-scoring doubles by Curtis Ledbetter and Colin Shockey.

Grose, who went 2-for-5 with four RBIs, highlighted Nebraskas five-run fifth with his sixth homer of the season, a three-run shot to left off CU reliever Marc Lewis, as the Huskers extended their lead to 8-0. After loading the bases on a pair of hits and a hit batter, Alex Gordons double scored a pair of runners before Grose sent Lewis offering over the fence in left two batters later.

The Huskers, who now have won the season series over Creighton in each of the past six years, eventually built the lead to 12-0, scoring a pair of runs in both the sixth an eighth innings. Joe Simokaitis led the Huskers 15-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs, while Colin Shockey was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Creighton (30-22) plated its only run in the ninth off reliever Tim Schoeninger when Gabe Lapito singled and moved to third on Dave Schultzs double before scoring on Matt Daeges double play two batters later.

The Huskers return to action Friday night, when they host No. 18 Oklahoma in a three-game series at Hawks Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. with afternoon tilts set for both Saturday and Sunday.
