DALLAS-Joseph
Hughes (Oklahoma) and Joba Chamberlain (Nebraska) have been chosen as
Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week
in voting by a panel of media covering Big 12 baseball for games played
Feb. 14-20. It is the third career Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor
for Chamberlain and first Player of the Week kudos for Hughes.
Player: Joseph Hughes, Jr., OF-P, 5-8, 160, Oklahoma (McKinney, Texas)
The newcomer excelled in offense, defense and pitching as the Sooners
won 2-of-3 games in the Rice Coca Cola Classic. Hughes made his first
appearances at the plate and fueled the Sooner offense in wins over
Lamar (3-for-5, 4 RBI) and No. 11 Long Beach State (2-for-3, run). He
also pitched 1 2/3 innings of perfect baseball against No. 2 Rice with
three strikeouts. Against Lamar Hughes made his first career start in
center and had a team-2005-high four RBI in the 11-3 triumph. Against
LBSU he scored the eventual winning run in a 2-1 verdict and threw out
a potential game-tying run at the plate to preserve OU's win. For the
weekend he was 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate with two runs and four RBI.
Pitcher: Joba Chamberlain, Jr., 6-3, 225, Nebraska (Lincoln, Neb.)
Chamberlain was dominant in his first outing of the season while holding
No. 19 North Carolina State to just two singles over 7 1/3 innings in
NU's 4-3 win over the Wolfpack at Charleston, S.C. He fanned seven and
allowed just two hits to a team that entered the contest averaging over
17 runs per game and hitting .460 as a team. Chamberlain now is 5-1
with a 1.89 ERA in eight starts against nationally-ranked teams during
his two-year career.
