Huskers Fall to Arizona State, 75-63, in Title Game of ASU Hoops Classic

Nebraska postgame notes:

** Junior forward Andrew Drevo and sophomore guard Jake Muhleisen were named to the all-tournament team, along with ASU’s Ike Diogu and Tommy Smith, UCSB’s Mark Hull and Bucknell’s Baokai Lulugba. Diogu was named the tournament MVP. The all-tourney honors were the second for Muhleisen this season, as he was also selected to the all-tournament team at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, to open the season.

** Sophomore forward John Turek picked up his fifth foul with 15:37 remaining in the game, marking the first time this season he has fouled out of a contest.

** Junior Nate Johnson scored 18 points, his second-highest point total this season after collecting 23 against Ball State in the third game of the season. Johnson was 8-of-13 from the floor, marking a season-high in field goals and field-goal percentage (61.5 percent). His previous highs were seven field goals against Ball State, and 50.0 percent against Minnesota.

** The Huskers outrebounded ASU, 33-31, marking their seventh straight game gaining an advantage on the boards and eighth time this season.

** The 75 points allowed to the Sun Devils were the second-most this season, as the Huskers had allowed an average of 60 points per game coming into the contest. The most points NU has allowed this year was 81 against nationally ranked Creighton on Dec. 21.

** The Huskers’ 13-0 run in the second half tied for the third longest run for NU this season. It was the 11th run of at least eight straight points for the Huskers this season.

Head Coach Barry Collier quotes:

“We didn’t battle tough inside to get position on (Ike) Diogu. His strength was a factor in his scoring and getting to the foul line. They also penetrated too much against our defense.”

“John Turek is one of the more experienced inside guys and we missed a physical presence inside without him. We were not productive offensively inside and mishandled the ball, but give credit to ASU for their defense.”

Junior forward Andrew Drevo quotes:

“(ASU) played a good game and opened the first half moving the ball around well, and we got into foul trouble early. We gave up too much penetration and got behind too much to make up for.”

“They are athletic and quick, but we will play plenty of athletic and quick teams in the Big 12. We have to play defense and not have the breakdowns on our part. They played good defense and had a lot of helpside defense.”

“Early on, I was a little hesitant and not attacking the hoop, but I did more of that (going to the basket) in the second half. We just have to regroup and try to figure out how to get a better offensive effort.”
