Postgame Notes and Quotes (vs. Centenary, 11/21/02)
Barry Collier
On the defensive effort against Centenary
On defense, I thought it was a good, all-around effort. We kept their
field goal percentage down and made them take tough shots. We shut them
down well in the first half, but we struggled to take care of the ball
somewhat, and we fouled too much. At times, we played inspired and hard,
which is what you like to see in the first game of the year.
On the balance
of the team offensively
Our team is unselfish. I think we will be balanced on offense most days,
but the keys is getting that effort in successive games.
Thoughts of the
Alaska-Fairbanks team you will play Saturday.
I saw a little of the game vs. Green Bay and I was impressed. They kept
Green Bay off-balance most of the game and kept the game in control. We
will have our hands full on Saturday.
Corey Simms
Overall thoughts of the game
When we started the game a little below expectations because everyone
still had a little bit of the jitters with it being the first game of
the year. Once we got going, everyone played well.
On so many people
contributing on offense
Everyone contributed in their own way and helped on both ends of the floor.
I was able to crash the boards some and get open for some shots off the
rebound.
On winning away
from the Devaney Center
Tonights game was good to win because we always want to try to win
on the road. Saturday (against UAF) will be the first real away game for
us and the crowd should get into it more. It will be hard, and we need
to play better, but it should be a good game.
Brennon Clemmons
On getting a win in the season opener
It felt good to win the first game of the year, and its always good
to win away from home.
On the balanced
offensive attack
Everyone shot the ball well tonight. The more people who contribute on
offense, the more difficult it is for the opponent to stop us.
On the teams
defensive pressure
Defensively
we played good for the most part. We need to stop fouling so much. They
got a lot of free throws and we need to take that away. But it was a good
first win.
NU postgame notes
vs. Centenary:
** Nebraskas victory was its second straight in a season opener,
and the Huskers have won five of their last six season openers. The 45
points allowed in a season opener are the lowest since allowing Sam Houston
State just 42 points in the 1991-92 season opener.
**Nebraska held Centenary to just 45 points, one off the opponent team low for points in the Barry Collier era. The low was 44 points by Winthrop (11/27/01).
** The game marked the fourth contest the Huskers have held an opponent to less than 50 points under Collier and was the fewest points Nebraska has allowed away from the Devaney Center since a 56-45 victory over Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., on Feb. 16, 1983. Overall, NU has held an opponent to less than 50 points away from the Devaney Center four times since 1983, with the last coming in a 65-46 win over Baylor in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament at Kansas City in 1998.
** Seven players made their debut in a Husker uniform Thursday against Centenary. Forward Andrew Drevo and guard Nate Johnson were each in the starting lineup at the beginning of both halfs, while redshirt-freshmen Bronsen Schliep and Tony Wilbrand, along with true freshmen Wesley Wilkinson, Jason Dourisseau and Roy Enright, made their first career appearances. Wilkinson was the first Husker off the bench in the first half.
** Nebraska held Centenary to just 10 field goals in the game, setting an opponent team low in the Barry Collier era. The previous low was 15 field goals by Savannah State (1/2/02) and Winthrop (11/27/01).
** Brian Conklin had two three-pointers and needs just 10 more to become the ninth Husker to reach 100 three-pointers his career. Conklin needs just six three-pointers to pass Jamar Johnson (95 in 1992-94) for ninth on the NU all-time list.
** Corey Simms
10 points tied a career high, set last season in a victory at Texas A&M
(2/20/02). Simms was the Huskers only scorer in double-figures,
although 10 of the 15 Huskers to enter the game scored at least two points.
