Nebraska Shuts Down Gents in 68-45 Victory

LINCOLN ---- Behind a pair of double-doubles from sophomore John Turek and junior Andrew Drevo, the Nebraska men's basketball team improved to 4-3 with a 63-46 win over IPFW Saturday night in front of 5,572 fans at the Devaney Sports Center.

Turek, a native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, scored a season-high 18 points, while pulling down 11 boards, for his first career double-double. Turek, who was 8-of-11 from the field, also added four blocks on the night, upping his team-high blocks-per-game average to 2.29.

Turek's partner in the post, Drevo posted his second consecutive double-double with 13 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. Over the past three games, Drevo is averaging 18.3 points and 12 rebounds a game.

Drevo and Turek's efforts helped the Huskers to a 45-34 advantage on the boards and a 28-14 nod in points in the paint. It was the fifth time this season Nebraska outrebounded its opponent, and fourth straight game.

The Huskers took control of the game in the first 6:55 of the second half with a 15-0 run after holding only a 28-26 advantage at the intermission. IPFW was able to cut the Husker lead to nine at 48-39 with nine minutes to go in the game, but NU extended the advantage back to 15 with a 6-0 run, including a pair of buckets from Drevo, over the next three minutes to hold off the Mastadons.

Also putting together solid scoring nights was the guard combination of Jake Muhleisen and Nate Johnson. Muhleisen, a sophomore from Lincoln, scored 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Johnson hit double figures for the third consecutive game with 12 points.

In the first half, Nebraska jumped out to an early lead with a 13-0 run, eight of which came from Turek, to take a 19-7 lead. The Mastadons responded though with a 14-3 run of their own to cut the Husker advantage to one at 22-21 with six minutes to go before halftime.

IPFW, which fell to 2-9 on the season, was led in scoring by guard Terry Collins with 10 points on just 4-of-17 shooting.

For the game, the Huskers held IPFW to just 27 percent shooting (17-of-63), while NU was able to hit on 48 percent of its shots (24-of-50). The Huskers have limited opponents to under 40 percent shooting in six-of-seven games this year, while the Mastodons' 46 points marked the second time this year NU had held its opponent to under 50 points.

Nebraska returns to action next Saturday night against nationally ranked Creighton at the Devaney Center starting at 7:05 p.m.
