Huskers Fall at Home to Kansas, 81-51

Lincoln. ----- Nebraska became just the fifth team this season to limit the Jayhawks to less than 45 percent shooting from the floor, but the effort wasn’t enough as No. 13/14 Kansas picked up an 81-51 victory over the Huskers here Saturday. NU fell to 9-11 overall and 1-6 in league action while KU improved to 15-5 and 5-1.

The Huskers started slow, missing their first six shots from the field before juniors Andrew Drevo and Nate Johnson gave NU a spark. The tandem helped Nebraska hit five of its next six shots, including four straight, as the Huskers took an 11-10 lead on Drevo’s jumper with 13:30 to play in the first half. But the surge would not last long, as NU missed its next seven shots as the Jayhawks ran off 10 unanswered points that eventually led to a 23-5 run.

Drevo finished the game with 15 points, the only Husker to reach double figures. He nearly added his second straight double-double as he pulled down a team-high seven boards. Despite Drevo’s efforts, the Huskers were outrebounded by a 52-34 margin, as KU had 21 offensive boards that led to 19 second chance points and 40 points in the paint.

After trailing by 15 at the intermission, 38-23, the Huskers put up a strong effort, hitting half of their shots (4-of-8) from the field in the first six minutes before the Jayhawks defense limited NU to just three baskets over the next eight minutes.

Keith Langford and Kirk Hinrich led KU with 17 points apiece while Aaron Miles and Nick Collison added 14 each. Miles made it a double-double with 10 assists while Collison just missed it with nine rebounds.

Nebraska returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when the Huskers hit the road to take on Texas Tech. The game will tip off at 8:15 p.m. CST.
