Drevo is Golden in Upset over No. 17 Minnesota

Lincoln - Andrew Drevo scored 10 of his career-high 27 points in a 16-0 run to open the contest, as Nebraska rode the emotional start to a stunning 80-60 triumph over No. 17 Minnesota at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Sunday afternoon.

Drevo, a 6-foot-8, 270-pound forward, ignited the Devaney Center crowd of 8,162 by scoring 10 of the Huskers’ first 12 points. Nebraska took control from the start, holding the visiting Golden Gophers scoreless for the first 5:58 of the contest.

The junior transfer from Morningside College set the tone for NU on both ends of the court, setting career bests in both points and rebounds for his first career double-double, while taking a pair of charges in the opening minutes.

The inspired play helped NU, who evened its record at 3-3, build a 21-point lead in the first 12 minutes. The Huskers were never challenged in handing the Gophers (4-1) their first loss of the year.

Nebraska’s 80 points was a season high, as the Huskers posted their first win over a ranked opponent since an 80-69 win over Texas Tech on Jan. 30, 2002. The Huskers used a stifling defense, holding UM to a season-low 31.1 percent shooting and converting 16 Golden Gopher miscues into 19 points.

Nebraska, which has beaten at least one ranked opponent in 11 of the past 13 seasons, saw the lead trimmed to 46-32 with 17:46 remaining, but Drevo quickly ended the Gophers’ comeback. He scored five straight points to trigger a 17-2 run, as NU pushed the margin to 29 points, at 63-34, with 12:28 remaining.

Junior Nate Johnson joined Drevo in double figues with 14 points in the win. Jake Muhleisen finished with seven points and a career-high 10 assists for the Big Red, which turned the ball over a season-low eight times.

Maurice Hargrow led three Minnesota players in double figures with 15 points, while Michael Bauer and Jerry Holman added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Huskers held All-America candidate Rick Rickert scoreless in 17 minutes, marking the first time the 6-10 forward was held scoreless in his collegiate career. Rickert, who missed the Gophers’ last game with the flu, missed both of his field goal attempts and grabbed five rebounds.

The Huskers return to action next Saturday, Dec. 14, when they play host to IPFW, beginning at 7:05 p.m.
