 Huskers Fall to Cowboys, 77-70

Nebraska Head Coach Barry Collier
Opening Comment

“The team competed really hard tonight and gave ourselves a chance to win. We played much better ball than we have in several games recently because of the intensity. I was proud of our effort. OSU did a really nice job rebounding the basketball. Victor Williams was extremely effective for them in the second half.”

“We want hope for the future to be on Saturday. When you play intensely, you give yourself the best chance to win. There’s no reason we can’t generate that again for the next game and build on it to make it a constant.”

On Brennon Clemmons
“I thought that Brennon Clemmons was very impressive and really helped us when we played a shorter lineup. He had to go a lot of minutes and it was a challenge defensively to guard Allen most of the night and obviously score the ball for us. He was a big factor in us getting to where we were."

On the team’s attitude
“We were disappointed that we lost, but we’re not going to be discouraged. Our team is trying to pick each other up and build each other up regardless of what the result is. We know that we’re going to come back and work at it tomorrow at practice and get after it on Saturday.”

On getting the job done at the end of a game
"I believe we think we can get it done. I also think OSU thinks they can get it done. Victor Williams was in charge for them. It looked like he missed some shots early and turned it over, but he battled through that and had a great game.”

Guard Brennon Clemmons
Overall

“The difference tonight was that we just gave up too many second shots and allowed them to penetrate too much. The effort we showed up with tonight is the effort we should have had in several games this year. Those were games that we lost that we might not have if we would’ve had the effort.”

On Nebraska’s Defense
“We played good defense and came out with intensity. We put a hand in their face. When they saw our energy they knew they had to change their game plan.”

On Nebraska’s Ball Movement
"We did a good job moving on the floor. We didn’t stand around. We stayed in motion which led to some good shots."

Guard Nate Johnson
On OSU guard Victor Williams

"Victor Williams impressed me tonight. I know how he plays, and he played at a whole new level tonight. When they were down, he did a good job of trying to figure us out defensively. He read what we were doing and figured out how to adjust."

OSU Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Opening Statement

“I thought that the first 10 minutes of the game were the worst 10 minutes I’ve ever had an Oklahoma State team play. The last 10 minutes of the first half, we played pretty well, but we missed some good looks and had to be a bit more paitent. I think we had something like 13 turnovers.

“In the second half, I thought we played as well as we have played all season until the last three minutes of the game. I really don’t think that we can play any better than we did then. I was a little upset with the numebr of fouls that we committed late in the game, and we got a bit sloppy there at the end, but we got it done.”

On Nebraska
“Nebraska played very well. I tip my hat to Barry Collier and his staff. They are a young team, and when you have a lot of young players, it gets to a certain point in the game when you get behind and it is hard to come back, but they did a great job tonight.”

Nebraska postgame notes:
** Nebraska’s 12 turnovers tied NU’s team low in conference play this season.

** Through first 12:19 of the first half, NU limited the Cowboys to as many points (9) as turnovers (9). OSU finished with 17 turnovers on the night.

** Junior forward Brian Conklin finished the night 3-of-9 from three-point range, including hitting his 100th career trey. Conklin now has 102 three-pointers for his career to rank ninth on the NU all-time list. He is only the ninth player in Nebraska history to record at least 100 treys. He was just 1-of-9 during the last seven games before tonight’s outburst.

** Conklin finished with seven rebounds, just one off his season high of eight set against Kansas in the first conference game of the year.

** Guard Brennon Clemmons, the only senior on the team, recorded a season-high 21 points for his third double-figure scoring effort of the season, and second straight after collecting 10 points at Texas Tech last week. His total was two off his career high of 23 at Texas A&M last year. Clemmons also had five assists, one off his season high of six at Texas Tech last Wednesday.

** Forward John Turek’s first block in the first half gave him 40 for the season, surpassing his total for all of last year. Turek ranks seventh on the NU career list with 79 blocks, and needs just five to pass Cookie Belcher for sixth.

** Turek recorded his team-high seventh double-figure rebounding effort of the year with 13 boards tonight. NU was outrebounded on the night by a 48-35 mark. Turek’s total was his second-highest total of the year and three off his career high of 16 against South Florida and Denver.

** Forward Andrew Drevo recorded his 14th double-figure scoring game of the season before fouling out with about six minutes remaining in the game. Drevo finished with 10 points and a season-low two rebounds.

** Nebraska is now 1-5 against ranked teams this season. NU still has games against three teams currently ranked in the top 25 this year, including the next two against No. 6/6 Texas and at No. 21/21 Missouri.
