Huskers Fall at Texas Tech, 75-49

Lubbock, Texas - Brennon Clemmons and John Turek each scored 10 points to lead Nebraska, as the Huskers fell to Texas Tech, 75-49, here Wednesday.

The Huskers (9-12, 1-7 Big 12) jumped out a to a quick start as junior Andrew Drevo hit a three-pointer and jump shot to give NU a 5-0 lead just 1:20 into the contest. The hot start would not last long, as Nebraska had seven missed shots and eight turnovers in its next 15 possessions as the Red Raiders went on a 26-0 run. The Huskers’ scoring drought lasted more than eight minutes until Turek hit a layup at the 10:09 mark and cut the Tech lead to 26-7.

Turek made it four straight points with a basket with 7:28 to play before halftime. Following a Clemmons steal, NU got a turnaround jumper from Wesley Wilkinson that started a comeback for the Huskers. Wilkinson’s bucket at the 5:32 mark started a stretch where Nebraska hit 5-of-7 shots to end the period, including four three-pointers. The surge trimmed NU’s deficit to just 12, 37-25, at the break.

“I thought Texas Tech came out aggressive in the first half, played good half-court defense and was aggressive on the offensive boards, particularly in the first half,” said NU head coach Barry Collier. “They were sound defensively and protected the ball. They forced us but we helped them with turnovers.

"Near the end of the first half, I thought we got some good shots and we started hitting some threes. We had better spacing on the floor and had a decent offensive lineup in there.”

In the second half, Tech continued to play aggressively, as it outdistanced the Huskers by a 17-4 count in the first eight minutes. TTU’s Kasib Powell scored six points in the run before finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. Andre Emmett led all scorers with 24 points while Nathan Doudney added 15 to help the Red Raiders give TTU head coach Bob Knight his 800th career victory.

Clemmons scored seven of his points after the intermission, when the Huskers were limited to 30.8 percent shooting from the floor. Clemmons had a season-high six assists and tied his career high with four steals.

Drevo finished the game with just the five points he scored in the opening minutes, but he chipped in a game-high 10 rebounds. It was his sixth double-figure rebounding effort of the year, although the other five came in double-double efforts. Nebraska was nearly even on the boards, as TTU took a 38-36 rebounding lead for the game.

Wesley Wilkinson also played well in his first career start, as he gained six points and six rebounds, each just one off his career highs.

Nebraska returns to action next week when it plays host Oklahoma State on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7:05 p.m. The Cowboys will be the third consecutive nationally ranked opponent to enter the Devaney Center.
