Huskers fall to Baylor

Waco, TX -- Brian Conklin scored a season-high 15 points and Brennon Clemmons added his first double-double of the year, but it wasn't enough as Baylor used a 15-5 run early in the second period to take a 78-64 victory over the Huskers here Saturday. With the loss, Nebraska fell to 9-16 overall and 1-11 in the league, while Baylor improved to 13-10 and 4-8 in Big 12 action.

Conklin came out strong in the first half, hitting a pair of three-pointers as NU nailed a season-high 64 percent (16-of-25) from the field in the opening period. A junior from Hubbard, Ohio, Conklin finished with a season-high 15 points to lead Nebraska on 5-of-8 shooting, all from behind the arc. Conklin's five three-pointers tied the team-season high and were just one off his career high.

Nebraska started strong, scoring the first six points of the game on three straight layups. The Huskers extended their lead to 10-5 at the 15:45 mark of the first period on a Corey Simms' layup, as NU hit six of its first eight shots from the floor.

After the Bears tied the game at 12-all with 13:23 to play before intermission, junior Andrew Drevo added a layup to start a 7-0 run that gave the Huskers their biggest lead of the game at 19-12 with 12:30 left in the period. Senior Brennon Clemmons capped the run with a pair of free throws before the Bears used a 17-5 run over the next six-plus minutes to take a 29-24 advantage on a Lawrence Roberts' dunk with 6:03 to play in the half. Roberts finished with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds, including 15 points in the opening frame.

Clemmons then got NU back on track, completing a conventional three-point play to pull the Huskers back within two, 29-27, with 5:08 to play. Nebraska then hit its last six shots of the half, including a pair of threes by Drevo, to go into the locker room tied at 40-all.

In the second period, Roberts helped the Bears to an eight-point advantage, 53-45, with 17:05 left, but the Huskers were not finished. Junior Nate Johnson sandwiched a pair of baskets around a Conklin trey to cut the deficit back to one, 53-52, less than two minutes later.

But a 15-5 Baylor run over the next six minutes put BU up 11, 68-57, at the 9:03 mark. Baylor hit three three-pointers in the surge to finish with 10 in the game. Baylor came into the contest ranked seventh in the nation with 9.4 three-pointers per contest.

Neither team could get the ball in the basket over the final nine minutes of the contest, as each team had just three field goals over that span. In the final five minutes of the game, the teams combined for just four points, as Baylor's John Lucas hit a three-pointer with 4:48 left and R.T. Guinn added the game's final point with a free throw at the 3:07 mark. Lucas finished with 16 oints while Guinn had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Conklin led four Huskers in double figures with 15 points, while Drevo had 13 points and six boards while Johnson scored 10 points.

Clemmons added his first double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and just missed becoming the first Husker in regular-season history to record a triple-double by adding a career-high tying eight assists. Clemmons had a triple-double in an exhibition game to being the 2003 campaign, gaining 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Northwest Sports Tours. Clemmons' 10 rebounds also tied his career high, as he had 10 rebounds against Sam Houston State and Iowa State in 2002, recording 10 boards in each game.

Nebraska hit a conference season high 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field, including a season-high eight three-pointers, while Baylor hit 44.1 percent from the floor. Baylor held a 40-28 lead on the boards, including a 27-16 advantage in the second period, and hit 16-of-22 from the foul line. NU had just seven attempts from the charity stripe, making four.

The Huskers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when they play host to Kansas State at the Devaney Center. The game will tip off at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on the Pinnacle Sports Network and Huskers.com.

NU then finishes the 2003 home schedule on Saturday, March 1, when the Huskers play host to Iowa State at 7:05 p.m. The game will be Senior Night, as Clemmons, the Huskers' lone senior, will be honored, while the NU Men's Basketball Hall of Fame will honor its newest members in a ceremony at halftime.
