Buffs turn back Huskers in Boulder

Boulder, Colo. -- The Nebraska mens basketball team made a furious second-half rally that came up just short, as the Colorado Buffaloes held on for an 84-69 victory here Saturday to end the regular season. The Huskers (11-18, 3-13 Big 12), who fell behind by 25 points early in the second period before storming back, were led by juniors Nate Johnson and Andrew Drevo, who each score 19 points.

Coming out of the intermission, Colorado (19-10, 9-7 Big 12) opened the period on an 11-0 run over the first 2:30 to take a 50-25 lead. Colorado senior forward Stephane Pelle led the charge with six points in the surge, and 12 points in the first five minutes of the second half before finishing with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Pelle put the Buffs advantage back to 25 points, 56-31, on a break-away dunk with 15:03 left in the game. The Huskers started chipping away at the lead following the slam, as NU went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes, including 10 unanswered.

Drevo started the surge with a layup and Johnson added a pair of baskets. Senior Brennon Clemmons then added a 17-footer and sophomore John Turek nailed a pair of free throws to cut the Huskers deficit to 15, 56-41, with 11:40 to play. Center David Harrison followed with a basket to end CUs drought before sophomore Corey Simms and Johnson claimed two more baskets to cut the CU lead to 58-45.

Harrison scored six points in the next minute to push the advantage back to 19 and added another bucket before junior Blair Wilson scored on a layup off a steal for a 68-52 CU lead with 5:09 to play. The basket was the first by a Buff other than Harrison since Pelles dunk at the 15:03 mark, as Harrison reeled off 10 straight points during the span.

Trailing 74-58 with under three minutes to play, Drevo hit a five-footer with 2:15 left and then drained a three-pointer after a turnover just 17 seconds later to cut the lead to 11 at the 1:58 mark. The Lincoln native then added a pair of free throws to get Nebraska within single digits, 74-65, for the first time since the 2:15 mark of the opening period.

Mookie Wright followed with his only basket of the day with a driving layup before Drevo scored his ninth straight point to keep it a nine-point game. Wright then hit four consecutive free throws and reserve Matt Greenwald made a basket before Johnson scored NUs final points on a jumper with eight seconds left. Ahead by 13, CU then added a basket with two seconds remaining.

In the opening period, the teams played tight as CU held just an 11-10 lead eight minutes into the game. Wilson then heated up and gave the Buffaloes a little breathing room as he hit a trio of three-pointers in the next 3:30 to put Colorado ahead 28-17 with seven minutes left before the half. Nebraska cut the lead to seven, 32-25, on a three-point play as Turek dunked and was fouled, but that was as close as they would get in the first frame. CU then went on 7-0 run to finish the period ahead 39-25.

Johnson and Drevo tied for team-high scoring honors with 19 points each as they combined to hit 15-of-30 from the floor. Nebraska hit 48.7 percent in the second period to get back into the contest after hitting just 27.3 percent in the opening frame. Colorado hit 47.5 percent from the floor for the contest, but was limited to 26.7 percent from three-point range. The Huskers, who trailed on the boards by 11 at the intermission, hit the glass hard in the second period to finish the game down just 43-39.

With the loss, Nebraska enters the Big 12 Tournament as the 12th seed on Thursday, March 13, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Huskers will face No. 5-seed Missouri at 2:20 p.m., while Colorado (19-11, 9-7 Big 12) will be the sixth seed and will face No. 11-seed Kansas State in the nightcap Thursday.
