Huskers upend Kansas State

Lincoln -- Sophomore John Turek recorded a double-double and four Huskers scored double figures as Nebraska earned a 68-61 victory over Big 12 foe Kansas State here Tuesday. In front of a Devaney Center crowd of 7,114, the Huskers snapped a nine-game losing streak to improve to 10-16 on the year and 2-11 in the league, while KSU fell to 12-14 overall and 3-10 in conference action.

Turek finished the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, and third of his career. It was also Turek's first double-double in conference action, as he hit 4-of-10 from the field and picked up six offensive boards. Turek added a career high four steals, as the Huskers tied their season single-game high of 10 steals.

Joining Turek in double figures, junior Andrew Drevo scored a game-high 19 points and added six boards and two blocked shots, including one with 17 seconds remaining with the Huskers leading by eight. Senior Brennon Clemmons added 15 points, including hitting four free throws in the final minute to seal the win, and tied his career high with four steals. Clemmons nearly recorded his second straight double-double by collecting eight rebounds, and added a team-high four assists. Junior Nate Johnson pitched in 15 points with 12 coming in the first period.

Nebraska jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first minute of action and Drevo made the lead 7-4 on a three-pointer with 17:30 remaining the first half. The Wildcats wouldn't let NU get too far ahead, as they tied the game six times over the first eight minutes of the contest before taking a three-point lead, 18-15, on a Gilson DeJesus three-pointer at the 11:47 mark. The trey was KSU's lone basket from downtown during the game, as NU limited the Wildcats to just 1-of-11 shooting from three-point range for the game, including 0-for-7 from long range in the second half. KSU's 9.1 percent from downtown was an NU opponent season low.

Following DeJesus' trey, the Wildcats held the lead for the four minutes until Clemmons hit a jumper to give the Huskers a 25-24 advantage at the 7:22 mark. NU extended the lead to five, 34-29, on a Jason Dourisseau three-pointer with 3:23 left before the intermission, but that would be the Huskers' last points of the period, as the teams went into the locker room tied at 34-all.

Nebraska opened the second period on a 10-0 run to take a 44-34 advantage on Clemmons' conventional three-point play with 15:38 left to play. The lead would not last long, as Kansas State rallied for a 12-0 surge over the next 4:38, including four points apiece from Marques Hayden and Pervis Pasco. Pasco, who was the only Wildcat in double figures with 16 points, then picked up two fouls in a 26-second span to foul out at the 8:25 mark.

Turek's ensuing free throw tied the game at 47-all and , after a KSU basket, Drevo gave the Huskers the lead for good, 50-49, on a three-pointer with 7:07 remaining in the game. Turek scored the next three points, with the last coming on a free throw at the 5:16 mark, and Nebraska never led by less than four the rest of the way.

The Huskers finished the game hitting 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the floor, but were just 3-of-15 (20.0 percent) from three-point range. KSU, which hit just 36.0 percent (18-of-50) from the field, held a slight advantage on the glass, 42-40, although it was the first time in seven games Nebraska recorded at least 40 boards. NU committed a conference season-low 10 turnovers in the contest.

Nebraska returns to action on Saturday, March 1, when the Huskers play host to Iowa State at the Devaney Center. The game will tip off at 7:05 p.m. and will be heard on the Pinnacle Sports Network and Huskers.com. Prior to the contest, NU's lone senior, Brennon Clemmons, will be honored, while the NU Men's Basketball Hall of Fame will introduce its newest members at halftime.
