Huskers Drop Big 12 Contest at Iowa State, 71-61

Ames, Iowa ----- Using its best shooting first-half on the road since the season opener, Nebraska took a two-point lead into intermission before watching Iowa State take 16-4 run to open the second frame, helping the Cyclones to a 71-61 victory in Big 12 play here Saturday.

The Huskers' (9-9, 1-4 Big 12) halftime lead evaporated almost immediately, as ISU's Tim Barnes hit the first of back-to-back three-pointers that gave the Cyclones the lead for good with just 35 seconds gone in the period. The Cyclones (11-5, 1-4 Big 12) went on to hit 63.0 percent from the floor in the second half, while limiting the Huskers to just 25.8 percent shooting. Nebraska's shooting woes in the second half came as a result of ISU's shot-blocking efforts with the Cyclones recording a Big 12 Conference-record 17 blocked shots, including 14 in the second period.

The Cyclones extended their advantage to 13 points, 57-44, with 8:06 to play before NU started chipping away at the lead. Sophomore John Turek hit a basket that started a 13-5 Nebraska run and cut the deficit to five, 64-59, with 3:04 to play. Junior forward Andrew Drevo powered the run with six points, while freshman Jason Dourisseau added five points, including a three-pointer to pull the Huskers within five.

Drevo was one of three Huskers to score in double figures, as he added 11 points and three rebounds off the bench. Guard Nate Johnson lead the Huskers with 17 points, while adding five assists and three rebounds, and sophomore Corey Simms had 13 points, including 12 in the first half. Turek lead Nebraska with 11 rebounds, as the Huskers outrebounded the Cyclones by a 36-30 mark, including 13-4 on the offensive glass.

But ISU continued to hit big shots despite Nebraska taking the momentum away. Barnes hit a basket following Dourisseau's trey and Adam Haluska hit a three-pointer as time was running down to give ISU a 69-61 lead with just over a minute remaining.

In the first half, Nebraska opened by missing its first six shots from the floor and fell behind 5-0 before catching fire. The Huskers then hit their next eight attempts, including scoring 11 straight, to open an 18-9 lead with 12:10 left in the half. Nebraska took its largest lead of the game at 22-11 when Dourisseau hit a jumper just under the 10-minute mark before the Cyclones started to rally.

Jake Sullivan scored ISU's first 11 points and had 18 in the opening period. Sullivan hit 9-of-14 for the game to finish with 23 points as the Husker defense clamped down in the second frame. Barnes finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting while forward Jackson Vroman just missed a triple-double with 10 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots.

Nebraska returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Devaney Center when the Huskers play host to No. 21/20 Missouri at 7:05 p.m.
